Patricia O'Donoghue, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, teacher and gardener, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026 at the age of 76. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, John; children John (Laina), Charles (Dana), James (Girlie), and Michael; grandchildren Ian, Evan, Jack, Callie, PJ, Keira, and Jillian; dozens of adoring in-laws, nieces, and nephews; and dog, Bella Nelson.
For 40 years, Patricia dedicated her life to education. She started as an instructor at Lexington Institute of Hospitality Careers. From there, parents at Christ the King Elementary School recruited her to direct the school's plays for eight years-an opportunity that arose simply because she mentioned she could sing a little and dance a little. Afterwards, she taught at and eventually became Principal of Council Oak Montessori School, serving the community for 24 years until retirement. That retirement lasted only three weeks before she returned to the classroom at Brookview Montessori School in Benton Harbor, Michigan, where she continued her work for another three years. She believed in the potential of every student and modeled the Montessori principles of grace and courtesy throughout her life. Whether in the classroom or beyond, she taught lessons that extended far beyond textbooks-kindness, perseverance, and respect for the world around us.
Outside the classroom, Patricia found joy with her hands in the soil and her feet in the sand. An avid gardener, she nurtured beauty from the ground up, believing that planting gardens was both an act of hope and a lesson in patience. She treasured walks along the beach and sun-filled afternoons, especially with family and friends at Lake Michigan.
Patricia is remembered for her beauty from the inside out. She will also be remembered for her humor, her energy, steady guidance, and the countless lives enriched through teaching and generosity. She believed deeply in growth-of minds, communities, families, and gardens alike.
A funeral Mass will be held on January 8 at 11:00am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joseph, with a private family burial following at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to Council Oak Montessori in
Blue Island, IL (From Acorns to Oaks: Building our Legacy) or Brookview Montessori School in
