Patrick says he had an uneventful childhood, did not care for school, quit high school in the 12th grade and joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean War at the ripe ol' age of 17! After boot camp and Radioman "A" school, he went to his first ship, the U.S.S.Thuban AKA 19. He traveled to various ports-o-call including Havana, Cuba; a Mediterranean cruise during which he saw France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Sicily, Turkey, and Gibraltar. In 1955 he made a Northern cruise to Newfoundland and the Northwest Territories where he saw firsthand ice flows, icebergs, polar bears, walruses, all in the wild, and met a Mountie, and met Eskimos and their dogs. In 1956 he spent Christmas in Rome, Italy and one of the highlights was an audience with the Pope! During the time he was on the ship they made several trips to the Caribbean where they visited islands such as St. Thomas, San Juan Puerto Rico, etc.
