Patrick (Pat) Ferris, a beloved figure in both his local communities in New Jersey and County Kerry, Ireland, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024, at Riverview Hospital in Red Bank, New Jersey, after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving children, PJ and Aileen (Maroney), showcasing the strong family bonds he cherished throughout his life.
Born in Dungeel, Killorglin, County Kerry, Pat's journey took him through various cities, including New York and San Francisco, before settling in Middletown, New Jersey. He was predeceased by his cherished wife, Susan (née Roberts), their infant daughter Christine, and his parents, Eugie and Nora. Pat's legacy continues through his children PJ and Aileen, daughter-in-law Kara, son-in-law John Maroney, and his adored grandchildren Georgia and Juliette.
Pat was a proud member of a large family, survived by his sister Eileen Twiss of Callinafercy, brothers John Christy (New York), Gene (County Meath), and James (Dungeel), as well as numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and a vast network of cousins and friends spread across the USA and Ireland. His presence will be greatly missed by his wide circle of friends, especially within the GAA community.
An accomplished athlete, Pat was the Captain of the Laune Rangers Minor Team, which won the Mid-Kerry Championship in 1961. He served as the Senior Captain of the Laune Rangers team in 1965 and proudly represented Kerry in Gaelic football, earning a Munster Championship medal as a Kerry Junior that same year. His love for the sport remained a lifelong passion, as he frequently attended games at Gaelic Park and Woodlawn, instilling that same love for football in his family. He actively supported his son PJ during his time playing for Saint Joseph's football in Bergen County.
Professionally, Pat worked as a fitter welder at Liebherr in Killarney before emigrating to New York in 1965, where he became a skilled carpenter and joined Local 608 in Manhattan.
Pat's life was a testament to his dedication to family, friends, and the community. He celebrated every moment with a spirit of joy and enthusiasm, leaving behind a legacy of love and commitment to those he touched.
In Pat's favorite salutation, "Shake the hand that shook the world," he leaves behind a warmth and impact that will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of sharing in his life.
