Patsy Lucille Ray, 83, passed away peacefully in Asheville on Wednesday, November 26, 2025. A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, she enriched the lives of those around her with her unwavering love and dedication.

Born and raised in Buncombe County, Patsy devoted her professional life to service, working for 32 years at the Biltmore Estate where she ultimately retired as the Head of Housekeeping. Before her esteemed tenure there, she served as the Cafeteria Manager at Sand Hill Elementary School for a decade, showcasing her commitment to nurturing both her family and her community.

Patsy attended the Moores School of Business, which laid the foundation for her successful career. A member of Browns View Church since 1950, she found joy and purpose in her faith, leaving a lasting impact on her congregation.

Patsy's personality shone brightly through her love for her family. She was a devoted wife to her loving husband of 43 years, Tommy Ray. Together, they built a warm and inviting home that welcomed their children and grandchildren. Patsy is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Sluder, and her grandchildren: Cameron Sluder, Christian Sluder and his wife Tiffany, and Colby Sluder. She was also a proud great-grandmother to Eleanor Sluder and Riley Sluder. In addition to her immediate family, Patsy is remembered fondly by her sister, Janet Cogburn; her brother, Michael Smith; her sisters-in-law, Lilly Smith and Joann Sluder who was also a close friend; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family who will carry her memory forward.

Patsy was preceded in death by her parents, Grover Cleveland Smith and Faye Hannah Smith; her son, Kelvin Douglas Sluder; her brother, Roger Smith; her brother-in-law, Vernon George Cogburn, Jr.; and her sister-in-law, Joyce Smith. Their memories remain intertwined with hers, creating a legacy of love and connection that will be cherished by all who knew her.

Visitation will be held at Browns View Church in Candler on Sunday, November 30, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:15 PM, followed by a funeral service at the same location at 2:30 PM. Rev. Ricky Netherton will officiate. Friends and family are invited to join in honoring Patsy’s remarkable life and the profound impact she has had on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her spirit will continue to guide and inspire her loved ones as they carry her legacy in their hearts.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to Browns View Church, 25 Brownsview Church Rd, Candler, NC 28715.
