I remember Professor Berg as an inspiring, funny, thoughtful and kind educator. For all the awards he later achieved, he was first and foremost a great teacher. I was a math major, one of six women in the class of '78, and as Stanford required math majors to minor in a science (so we might find some useful path forward other than in pure math), I chose biology. It was the early days in bio-math, and I was smitten with population genetics . I nearly went on to get my PhD in the subject, but opted instead for the "easier" path - law and public service. I am forever grateful for my wide ranging experiences at Stanford. I send condolences to the family, as one of the multitude and multiple generations of students whose lives Professor Berg touched. May his memory be a blessing.
