Paul Byron Obituary

Byron, Dr. Paul "Doc" MD, DO, DC
GREENWICH - Dr. Paul "Doc" Byron, MD, DO, DC, 76, passed away, Sunday, July 6, 2025, at Albany Medical Center. He was a beacon of joy, kindness, and compassion. Born on April 18, 1949, to the late William and Margaret (O'Brien) Byron. Paul "Doc" Byron lived a life of service and dedication, both in his professional role as the Director of Medical Affairs at the NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities and in his personal life.
He had a heart as large as his personality, Paul was the embodiment of the Bible verse, "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms." (1 Peter 4:10)
Paul, enjoyed long walks with his wife, shooting at the gun range, and spending time with his friends. He and his beloved wife, Carol, would dress as Santa and Mrs. Claus for various events, bringing joy to others. Throughout his life, he carried dedication and enthusiasm for everything he did. His approach to life was full of fun, generosity, and a love for others. Paul truly could make a friend anywhere, and he brought life, fun, and generosity into any room he entered.
Paul served his country in the United States Army from 1970-1972. Following his service, he was deeply committed to his work as a doctor, having served his OPWDD community for over 30 years, and was loved by his patients and colleagues alike. His compassion and dedication were not confined to the clinic alone. He was a loyal friend, a loving husband, a devoted father, and the most wonderful brother.
Paul's larger-than-life personality was infectious, and he had a knack for storytelling that could light up a room. He was an ardent traveler, especially fond of his annual trips to Kenya, where he offered his medical services.
Paul was a pillar of strength, support, and unwavering love for his family, including his wife, Carol (Sands) Byron; sons, William (Jess Mahoney) and Ambrose (Lucy) Letoluai; siblings, Bill (Jan) Byron and Susan (James) Towne; special friends, his "Pod People," Bill and Cathy LaBarge, Rob Haren, David Basani, Bruce Altman, Tom and Lynn Tobin; and his cousin, Brian (Linda) Soloski; his "Tribe," Beth and Mike Jaquinto, and Lisa and Brian Clark; as well as several, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
Visitation for Paul will take place on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, from 3 - 7 p.m., at Flynn Bros, Inc. Funeral Home, 80 Main St., Greenwich, N.Y. 12834. His Memorial service will follow on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at 10:15 a.m., at the same location, with interment to follow at 12 p.m., in the Gerald BH Solomon, Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville, N.Y. 12871. A reception for family and friends will follow his Burial, at Greenwich Elks Lodge #2223, 130 Bulson Rd., Greenwich, N.Y. 12834.
In lieu of flowers, Paul's family strongly suggests donations in his memory to be made to loisabaccf.org or to LCCF, P.O. Box 655, Saratoga Springs, N.Y. 12866, to help continue medical care for residents in Kenya.

Paul was one of a kind. He was a lifelong friend having met just before middle school at St. Teresa´s through our days at VI, CYO basketball, and Paul´s assignment and return from Korea. After his return from Korea, trying to keep up with his geographic locations and academic pursuits became a full time job. As our lives evolved, we were not as close as before, as the song says "You can´t make old friends." When we did catch up, it was like time disappeared and we picked up where we had left off. Paul was a true friend- memories and times good and bad, Paul was someone you could always count on to listen. Paul´s obituary sums up the essence of his life-loyal friend, loving husband, devoted father, infectious personality. When you see Paul Byron 1949-2025, you realize no one jam packed the dash with more life! To quote another song, "Eleanor Rigby was buried along with her name," is not the case with Paul. His name and memories will remain in our hearts forever. It is with great regret that we are unable to attend Paul´s services and rehash memories. Rest in peace my friend.

Doc was a very special Individual; I was fortunate to know him from his residency through his work at OPWDD. He had a warm personality and was a wealth of information. You could always count on him for guidance and patience any time of the day or night. He touched so many lives. Doc also had a great sense of humor. My heart goes out to his family and all those that he made a positive impact on, thinking of him will always bring a smile to many faces. Thinking of you Bill Byron. Thanks Paul for being you!

We have been neighbors of the Bryon family for the past 25 years. Our house is the very next one up the road from the Bryon´s. Paul and Carol would graciously invite us to gatherings at their house. Paul was clearly one of a kind and always prepared to provide medical advice when called upon by us. We both worked for agencies serving individuals with developmental disabilities. Paul was one of only a few physicians in the region prepared to serve this challenging population and he did so with the utmost of compassion and expertise. We will dearly miss him seeing him on the road or catching up with him at the supermarket.

I have known Paul for years and know he will be missed. I could always count on the response "normal" when I asked how he was doing.
