Paul Gill Obituary

Paul H. Gill Jr., 81, of Merrimack, NH formerly Philadelphia, PA; Boston, MA; and Hollis, NH, passed away on January 26, 2024 in Manchester, NH after a brief battle with lung cancer. He was surrounded by loved ones and passed peacefully.

Paul was born to Mary (Hamill) Gill and Paul H. Gill Sr., in Boston, MA on March 24, 1942. He was the grandson of Mary (Erben) Hamill and John Bernard Hamill who founded the Hamill Woolen Mills in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Also, grandson of Mable (Shepard) Gill and Augustus Herman Gill who was a professor of chemistry at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Paul spent his early years in Belmont, Massachusetts where he had a beloved cow and springer spaniel. During his childhood he moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and later to Boston, Massachusetts to attend college. Paul attended Belmont Hill School, Chestnut Hill Academy, Cushing Academy, and Boston University. Paul was a theatre major at Boston University, and his love of the theater and the arts continued throughout his lifetime. Paul enjoyed being a private detective after college and later served as the lieutenant and prosecutor for the Hollis Police Department. He was also a firearms instructor for the Hollis Police Department and thoroughly enjoyed his time with the police force. He also successfully ran Gill Security installing alarms for many residential and commercial businesses in the area. Paul was an avid photographer and experienced with all formats of camera. He often developed his own films and was an expert with the old manually adjusted cameras. Paul was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about antique clocks; from mantle clocks to tall clocks. Much of his love for clocks came from his father who was curator of the Old Sturbridge Village Clock Museum upon his retirement. Paul had a love and fascination with model trains as he worked on the Cog Railroad as a teenager. He also spent a summer working on Mount Katahdin and remembers it with great fondness. One of Paul's most loved dogs over the years was Jack his bulldog. Paul enjoyed trips to regional casinos. Paul most recently enjoyed being a member of Horseshoe Fish and Game.

Paul leaves a daughter, Katherine England, son-in-law, Shawn England, and three grandchildren, Brigid, Liam and Riona England. He also leaves his partner, or domestic love goddess as he would tell everyone, Katrin Achelis.

Per Paul's wishes, no services will be held and there will be a celebration of life at a later date.

If you are so inclined please make donations in Paul's name to the Hospice House in Merrimack, NH (https://www.hhhc.org/) as we have learned through this process far too many people are unable to afford the care they need as they get closer to the end of their lives.

Assisting with arrangements is the Cremation Society of New Hampshire, Manchester. To view Paul's online tribute, send condolences to his family, or for more information, visit https://csnh.com

I am so sorry to learn of the death of another member of my Cog Railway family. I am researching the history of the Mount Washington Cog Railway where my father, Norman "Jitney" Lewis ran steam trains for 18 seasons (1950-1967) and I grew up (1953-1967). The focus of my research is to tell the story of the world´s first mountain climbing railroad through the eyes and lives of the people who worked there. So far, I have identified over 3,150 names from 1866 forward. One of those names was Paul's. I'm wondering whether if he might have left some photos of his time at the Mountain OR stories of working on the railroad. I would like to include anything Paul's family might be willing to share. You can see what I'm up to at my research website. https://coggersofmtwashingtonnh.org/ - please contact me via the email that the Cremation Society has. Again, condolences from the Jitney Family of Mt. Washington.

I remember Paul as we both shared courtrooms as prosecutors at the Nashua District Court. We shared a few stories and some lunches on occasions. Paul always struck me as being very intelligent and fun to be around. I remember when he started his business and the time he spent at Hollis PD. Condolences to his family and may he rest in peace and be with our Lord and God.
