PAUL JUNG Obituary

JUNG, Paul Burton Age 61, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2024, due to complications from bacterial pneumonia. He was surrounded by his loved ones when he passed. Born on November 27, 1962, Paul is survived by his niece, Stephanie (Manning); his nephew, Steven (Manning); and his great many friends in the Massachusetts gymnastics community who were like his "family." He was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce, who passed only nine days before him; and his sister, Estelle (Miller). Paul attended Weymouth High School and then began his gymnastics coaching career in 1980. He coached the women's competitive team program at the Academy of Gymnastics in Stoughton, MA from 1982 to 1994, and then at Spectrum Gymnastics in Brockton, MA from 1994 to 2000, when he suffered a debilitating stroke that prematurely ended his coaching career. Prior to suffering his stroke, he was also a championship body builder, excelling in all aspects of physical fitness, as well as a New England Patriots cheerleader. During his 20-year career as a gymnastics coach, Paul touched countless lives, both young and old, with his knowledge and passion for the sport, boundless enthusiasm and ability to push athletes to their fullest potential, while doing so with his ever-present humor and affectionate smile. His athletes went on to become doctors, lawyers, physical and behavioral therapists, veterinarians, teachers, business executives, and, of course, gymnastics coaches and judges, among many other successful pursuits, and Paul played an important role in each one of their journeys. He instilled in each one of his athletes a positive, never-quit attitude, and always pushed them to "Do Whatever it Takes." Perhaps most symbolic of Paul's character, he faced even his most difficult and painful obstacle - the suffering of a debilitating stroke at the young age of 37 - with perseverance, strength and that well-known and well-loved smile. After recuperating as best he could physically, he worked at the Quincy YMCA as a personal trainer and ran classes he called the "kids room," designed for flexibility, agility, strength and fun. He was fondly remembered for his "Hi Dude" greeting and supporting and encouraging those around him with an "Awesome Job." Paul was a symbol of strength in every aspect of his life, notwithstanding his physical limitations. Family and close friends will fondly remember Paul's humor, his affectionate smile, and the way he cared so deeply for everyone around him. The Massachusetts gymnastics community has lost one of the most inspiring coaches it has ever known, with the loss of Paul Jung. Paul's family and friends are cordially invited to a Celebration of Life in honor Paul, which will be held on Friday, October 4, at 7pm, at Randolph Elks Lodge 2130 (21 School Street Randolph, MA). A Memorial Page has also been set up on FaceBook, where friends and family are welcome to share memories and photos of Paul.

I was thinking of Paul and thought I would look him up only to find out that he had passed away. We knew each other back in the 70s our mothers were girlfriends. We were just kids spending time together on the beach at my mom's house in Hull Mass. He was always a kind and gentle sort of guy. He used to introduce me to his friends as his cousin, it was just his way of showing affection. How could you not love a guy like that. RIP Paul............

So sad to hear about Paul´s passing! I knew him from camp Academy/camp West Woods during the summers - he used to drive my brother and myself to camp... what wonderful times we had driving from Weymouth to Stoughton morning and afternoon for years. Singing to Def Leppard & many great rock classics !!! Stopping for slushes or ice cream on our long trek back to the south shore at the end of day...What a great guy & what a wonderful committed guy to the art of gymnastics who guided so many young talented kids ! he was a truly an amazing and caring individual!!!!!!Haven´t seen him in years, but always thought of him and talked about him. The world is missing a great individual!!RIP

I am 50 years old and I'll never forget the joy Paul brought to me that one day at Stoughton Gymnastics Academy camp I learned my backwalkover on low beam at age seven. He and a buddy of his offered up a nicely presented award of the day in front of the whole camp, and a kiss on the cheek...yuck!! Hahaha. Love for him and his family.

When I was 5, my parents brought us to the Academy of Gymnastics because our dance teacher told us to put us in gymnastics. Paul took one look at us SKIPPING and we were in! Part of his midget team and that began 15 yrs of training, motivation, encouragement and memories that make Paul like a second dad to me. I would not be the leader or coach that I am today without Paul´s example. I love you Paul and your legacy lives on through each of us you touch so profoundly.

Paul was a great teacher. He worked with so many of the YMCA´S children and they benefitted greatly from his knowledge and skills as a coach!

Overnight, softball, Hans and Franz. Playing floor hockey with Paul and Tim. They destroyed us. We were 7 year olds. One of the coolest people I have ever met.

My first memory of Paul was taking my girls (age 5) to be evaluated as to their skill level for the gymnastics program at the Academy. He was so excited that they could skip! Silly me thought their cartwheels would impress him but no it was the skipping! Little did I know that what seems like a simple skill doesn´t come naturally to all! Paul was more than a longtime coach to my daughters - he was the driving force behind the confident, motivated women they are today. My husband and I are forever grateful to Paul - we always said that Krissy and Jenn had 3 parents! We have so many great memories of Paul, too numerous to mention here and look forward to sharing more and celebrating his life in October. We love you Paul and you will forever be in our hearts
