Paul Macri Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Palmer Funeral Homes - Hickey Chapel on Jan. 13, 2026.
Paul Angelo Carl Macri M.D., 91, of South Bend, died of natural causes on January 11, 2026. He was born December 4, 1934, in Mishawaka to Paul and Rose Macri. He was proud of his Italian heritage, speaking often of his many kind relatives.

He graduated from Mishawaka High School before attending Wabash College on a scholarship, then Indiana Medical School in Bloomington. He was a lifelong booster of Wabash, calling it the school that enabled him to become the man he was.

In 1961 he married Pam Jessup of Noblesville, IN, in Indianapolis. After moving with Pam to South Bend, he shared a family medical practice in Mishawaka with two other doctors, then opened a solo private practice in the 1980s. He volunteered as team physician for John Adams High School sports and Mishawaka High School sports. After retiring from private practice, he taught Introduction to Clinical Medicine at the Indiana Medical School branch at the University of Notre Dame.

A believer in healthy living, he exercised most of his life and ran with a group of friends until his body could no longer endure it, at which time he settled for walking. In 1994, at the age of 60, he finished the Chicago Marathon. He enjoyed watching sports, especially Indiana basketball during the Bob Knight era, the Boston Celtics during the Larry Bird era, and the Indianapolis Colts during the Peyton Manning era.

Paul was known as an excellent diagnostician whose primary concern at work was his patients. His warmth and humor put patients at ease. He considered their trust and confidentiality sacred. Many patients spoke of his ability to listen in a therapeutic way, and they mourned when he retired after thirty-seven years of family practice.

His devotion to his patients didn't prevent him from being a generous father and husband. He put family first, loved to talk and teach, and could easily turn strangers into friends. He found solace in jazz, blues, and Italian pop music until his last breath.

He is survived by his wife Pam, his sons Vince and Nick (Katie), his daughters Christi (Roy) Funkhouser, Lisa, and Mary Kay; his brother Jim (Sandy); grandchildren Joe Rehak, Luke and John Paul Macri. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Marie Dutoi and Sandy Pilat.

He was inducted into the Mishawaka Athletic Hall of Fame and the Indiana High School Sports Hall of Fame. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at Wabash College, American Association of Physicians and Surgeons, American College of Sports Medicine, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, and American Academy of Family Practice.
He was a lifelong member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 1:00 pm at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church 2310 E. Jefferson Blvd. South Bend, IN 46615. There will be a visitation the evening before on Friday, January 16, 2026 from 5:00pm-7:00pm at Palmer Funeral Homes-Hickey Chapel 17131 Cleveland Rd. South Bend, IN 46635. A private family burial will take place at Zimmer Cemetery in Noblesville, IN.

His grandson John Paul is in a battle with a rare brainstem cancer and has connected with a charity furthering research to find a cure. In Lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Tough Together at https://tough2gether.givecloud.co/fundraisers/team-john-pauls-fight-for-a-cure.

I met Doc in the late 80's when a group of us runners would leave from Studebagels and run all around Notre Dame Campus. Doc was always interested in what people had to say and he could continue to ask questions that really warmed people up to him. Doc was always an encourager to everyone. Always positive and willing to diagnose you particular health challenge at the time. He was full of a great deal of wisdom. We will all miss Doc. May the Macri family and friends find joy in sharing the wonderful memories of Doc. My heart goes out to you all.

Our family lost more than a Dr.we lost a dear friend. For over 30 years Dr Macri took care of our family and guided us over many seasons of life. His wisdom, kindness and steady presence shaped our family in ways he may never know. RIP Dr. Macri
