OBITUARY FOR
PAUL NELSON POWELL
February 4, 1936 – October 17, 2022
Paul Nelson Powell was born on February 4, 1936, to J. Bryan Powell and Pauline
Spunaugle Powell in their rural home near Faulkner, Kansas. He died at Syracuse
Area Health on October 17, 2022, at the age of 86.
After attending Cherryvale High School, Paul married his high school sweetheart,
Rita Alexander in 1955. Paul and Rita had four children; Cindy (Tony) Mumford;
Peggy Powell Mogensen; Doug Powell, and Chery (Greg) Cramer. During this time
Paul and Rita had settled into the town of
Louisville, Nebraska to raise their
family. Paul moved his family to
Weeping Water, Nebraska in 1963.
He began his career as a Teamster, until he joined Ironworkers Union Local 21,
where he worked until he retired in 1996. After retirement, Paul opened his own
welding business, named "One Stop Welding." He was very proud of his
aluminum wind resistor for the rock truck trailer that he named "Paul's Lite".
Paul had a vision for the future. In the 1970's he built a windmill, and in the
garage in his home, he developed a battery system to store electricity, now called
SOLAR ENERGY. When the lights went out across town because of a storm, the l
Powell family, were business as usual No lights out here!!
Paul was very ambitious, and built a home, with Rita at his side for their family of
six in the 1970's. He placed an elevator in this house to alleviate carrying
groceries up the steps. In 1994, when the children were grown, moved into
another home that he and Rita built.
Paul had many hobbies, over the years. In the 1960's you could find him working
on one of his favorite hobbies building a race car specifically a dragster! He
loved to hunt and fish. His kids were thrilled one summer day to find that their
Dad had made each of them a fishing pole a broom stick with line, hook, and
bobber. Fishing at its best! Paul and Rita enjoyed RVing and enjoyed many
excursions throughout the country. One of his very favorite hobbies was enjoying
ice cream, especially homemade!!
Paul was active in his community of Weeping Water, serving on the Fire
Department for many years. He also served a term on the Weeping Water City
