Paula Louise Smith, 69, of Peabody MA died peacefully October 30 surrounded by loved ones after a long struggle with melanoma. Born in 1950 in Stoneham MA, she was the youngest child of the late Anne M. (Maguire) Smith and George C. Smith. She is survived by her loving husband Paul Harty, dear sisters Susanne Smith (Frank Roderick) and Nathalie Meyfarth (George), cherished nephew Christopher Meyfarth, dear stepchildren Joseph Harty, Leigh (Harty) Walant (Chris), dear sisters-in-law Mary (Harty) Buckley, Kathleen Harty and Claire (Harty) Diminico, and loving cousins Dan Salera, William Smith, Joseph Smith, Paul Smith and Mary-Ellen Hodges. Paula attended Stoneham High School, Westbrook College and Windham College. She retired in 2012 after 25 years with the Mass. Water Resources Authority, prior to that she had a rewarding career at Harvard Community Health Plan. After retirement Paula worked as a personal organizer and companion. She found great joy later in life in her marriage to Paul Harty. Paula was a woman of great warmth, wit, and charm. Her intelligence and strong organizational skills combined with a marvelous sense of humor and appreciation of the absurdities of life, greatly endeared her to all who knew her. When asked about hobbies, Paula always said that her hobby was her family and friends, and she had a wide circle of friends from every stage of her life. She exhibited great courage and compassion throughout her illness. Paula's family is grateful for the skill and compassion shown by the medical staff at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's Reisman11th Floor Oncology Dept. and 4th floor Finard ICU. In addition, they are thankful for the wonderful care she received in the last weeks of life at the Kaplan Family Hospice House. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held in the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Sunday, Nov 3 from 1-4pm. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Paula's name can be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center https://donate.splcenter.org/ or, the Kaplan Family Hospice House, checks payable to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan St. Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923 (Memo: Kaplan Family Hospice House), or on-line at https://www.caredimensions.org/giving/

So sorry to see that Paula had died. Knew her way back in Stoneham on Calthea St. Believe I last saw her at her mother's celebration of life or in North Andover when she lived there. So hard to lose the baby of the family. Deepest sympathy to all. Would like Suzanne's address if possible. Stay safe in these crazy times.

I met Paula over fifty years ago at Windham College and was immediately taken in by the wonderful Smith family. George, Anne, Suzanne, Natalie, and Paula - none of them ever met a stranger. I remember a household filled with witty conversation, loud laughter and classic jazz playing in the background. My friendship with Paula was long and not necessarily complicated. We were always glad to see each other and took memorable trips together. I'm especially honored to have been included in her large boisterous circle of friends. She will forever hold a special place in my memories and my heart. Paul, I wish you the best through this difficult time. You and Paula were a formidable couple - tolerant, kind, loving, and laughing easily. I've always enjoyed our conversations about American music.
Peace and love,
Rhonda Scott

We, the Harty family were fortunate to have known Paula. We'll remember her as clever, witty, saucy, direct and a model of courage through her illness. She made our brother Paul's life richer as she is sure to have done with her family, and score of lifetime friends. She will be missed.

My deepest condolences to Paul and his family over the passing of Paula. I had the pleasure of meeting Paula when I stopped by to visit Paul to play music a few years ago. She still treated me like family. She was clearly a wonderful person.

Paula brought warmth, brightness and smarts to everything she touched. We had her in our lives as cousin and friend. Better luck could not be had. We'll try to temper our sadness with the great memories of her laughter and humor. Those thoughts will remain. To Paul we can only say you have our love for all you did for her and more.

Paula was a remarkable friend. Her smile, wit and offbeat sense of humor always made times with Paula happy occasions. We will miss the sparkle in her eyes as she poked fun at herself and the peal of her laughter.
