Pauline Holloway Obituary

Published by Roanoke Times from Oct. 8 to Oct. 9, 2009.
Pauline Gregory (Polly) Holloway, 74, of Vinton, Va., passed away suddenly on Tuesday, October 6, 2009, of natural causes. She is predeceased by her husband, Jim, who she loved and cherished for 43 years; and also by her parents, Otho and Gertrude Gregory. Surviving to enjoy her memory are her son, Jim Jr. and wife, Tammy, of Woodbridge, Va.; daughters, Sharon Hamre and husband, Scott, of Atlanta, Ga., Brenda Garrison, of Vinton, Va., and Marilyn Hoggatt and husband, Greg, of Pensacola Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Erin and Nick Tudor, of Vinton, Va.; sister, Louise Davidson, of Rogersville, Tenn.; and brother, Bill Gregory and wife, Ruth, of Kingsport, Tenn.
Polly touched so many lives in a positive way and truly made a difference in the world. She spent her whole life in service to others. She had a deep compassion for people and always took an active interest when someone was ill or had a personal tragedy. She was always there. She sincerely cared about her family, her friends, her employees and their families. More than anything she was a loving and thoughtful wife, wonderful mother, grandmother, friend, and sister. She loved and cherished her family with all her heart.

Polly attended a one room school house in Tazewell, Va., graduated from High School, went to Virginia Polytechnic Institute where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in home economics, and received a master's degree in nutrition.
Polly was a professional and her leadership permeated every aspect of her life. She began her career as a Bedford County extension agent, then moved to a teaching position for mentally challenged children and finally was the first school food services supervisor for the Roanoke County School system and remained in her position for 34 years until her retirement in 2000. During her career she started a breakfast program for low income children, developed the first centralized school menu and was affectionately known as "the lunch lady."
She served on the Roanoke County Schools Federal Credit Union Board of Directors and Finance Committee for 32 years and was a member of the National School Food Services Association and the American School Food Services Association throughout her career. She volunteered countless hours with the Alzheimer's Association and most recently organized all the food donations for the Alzheimer's Memory Walk. She was very active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, William F. Graves Chapter and the United Daughters of the Confederacy where she served as President for both. Polly was an active member of the Retired Teachers Association where she served most recently as District P Chairman. She was active in the Eastern Star of Vinton recently serving as Secretary, Bird Club, Lions Club and Peacock-Harper Culinary Friends at VPI. She was inducted into the old guard of Virginia Tech during her 50th class reunion. For 53 years Polly thoroughly enjoyed attending yearly gatherings of her VPI classmates at her dear friend's farm in Mt. Rush, Va.

Polly loved her church family, Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church, the Claudine Pedigo Sunday School Class, and Circle One. She also frequently volunteered her time to serve the homeless at a local shelter. She enjoyed the fellowship of the United Methodist Women's Group and the Roanoke Women's Connection.
Polly was as active a person as any one person can be-traveling the globe to see new places, experiencing new things, never went anywhere she didn't love, and always came home with new friends. Her travels took her to Europe many times, Africa, China, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and countless trips across the beautiful United States. She loved her many cruises with her family and friends. She also had a passion for the arts and actively supported local theater groups.

She will be sorely missed by her family, her friends, and all of the lives she touched.
In lieu of flowers, the Holloway family would prefer that donations be made to the Roanoke Alzheimer's Association, 2728 Colonial Ave., Suite 2, Roanoke, Va. 24015; Pedigo Sunday School Class, 707 E. Washington Avenue, Vinton, Va. 24179; or the Peacock-Harper Culinary History Collection at Virginia Tech, Director of Development University Libraries, Newman Library, Blacksburg, Va. 24061.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. on Friday, October 9, 2009, at Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church with the Reverend Lynne Alley-Grant officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Roanoke, Va. Visitation will be held at the Oakey's Vinton Chapel on Thursday, October 8, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Friday, October 9, 2009, from 10 a.m. to noon at Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church. A reception celebrating Polly's life will be held immediately after graveside services in the Jones Hall of Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Oakey's Vinton Chapel, 540-982-2221.

Jimmy, Sharon, Marilyn, and Brenda,
Rick commented this afternoon that now he knows why he and Polly saw things the same way while serving on the RCFSU board...they both had the same sort of upbringing. I will always remember how she cared about my mother, who came here and joined Polly's circle in 2000. She never failed to ask about her and recently visited her in Berkshire. Polly was always happy and smiling and was so proud of her family, with good reason!

On behalf of the William Byrd Players, we express our deepest condolences to the entire family. Polly was a supporter of the arts and loved young people; she never missed a show, and usually came to opening night. Her incredible heart and devotion to so many is an inspiration. Thank you so much for sharing her with us. We will miss her, but know she is still cheering us on from her heavenly box seat.

October 9, 2009

To Polly's children,
I only knew of your mother from my experiences with her in our DAR association. She was Regent when I came into the Roanoke Valley Chapter, half a dozen years ago. She was always busy, giving in the service of others. She was a delightful, intelligient and caring individual. We will all miss her greatly. May God bless you with peace & comfort as this time.

Dear Children of Polly,
I am so sorry to hear about your mother's death. She was a special lady to me. I met her when she was Polly Gregory and I was a 12- or 13-year old 4-Her in Bedford Co. She was my idol, and she played a huge role in my desire to attend Va Tech. I kept up with her through the years via my mother. I didn't know that Polly was from Tazewell (My mom was from the next county - Russell) so I bet they had many conversations about southwest VA. She and my mother attended United Methodist events, as well. 19 years ago when my mom died and we were in Oakey's in Vinton, I looked up and in walked Polly. I could not believe it. I know that she was there to honor my mother, but her hug and her kind words meant the world to me. I consider it a privilege to have known her. Cherish those wonderful memories you have of her, and know that mothers like her don't come along too often. And care for one another.

Dear Jimmy, Sharon, Marilyn & Brenda and all the family,

I can't express to you my sadness. I always thought of your Mom as one of my "extension Mom's" anyway, since she and my Mom were roomies all those years ago. And the visits and good times over the years . . . what a wonderful spirit is your dear Mother. I was so glad to have enjoyed her visit during her last trip to Tazewell for the Gregory reunion. I just happened to have been in town to visit from Pittsburgh.

She will be so greatly missed. Please know that we are all keeping all of you in our prayers. All our love,

I was fortunate to see Polly and give her a big hug for one last time on September 30 during one of my infrequent trips to Roanoke. Polly was a wonderful person in many ways and I was privileged to be one of her acquaintances for over 40 years. I know how much she loved her family and thus how much they must be grieving. To her family and friends, my sincerest and deepest sympathies.

October 8, 2009

My prayers and thoughts are with the family in this time of grief and loss. As a Dairy Council and later SUDIA employee, I was asked to present to the Roanoke County School Nutrition Staff by Polly on nutrition updates. Her staff was so appreciative of my presentations and her efforts...I have wonderful memories of my time with Polly and her staff. One could tell that her staff appreciated her leadership and I am honored to have been able to help her with staff development. Even though I am no longer with the dairy industry, I still think about the times that I met with her staff...fond memories. What a wonderful person and role model for other professionals. She will be missed.

To the children of Polly, I have very fond memories of your mother both from my childhood and as an adult. While your father, Jim was ill, Polly would bring him to my mother & father's home in Shawsville to visit. My father, Tommy Ross thought the world of Jim. We had many laughs during those days and your mother was so patient with him. I know Polly has dedicated her life to doing many wonderful things to help others. She was a dear person and I know she will be missed for so many reasons. I do remember spending the night at your house in Vinton when I was around 7 or 8 years old, going to the post office with everyone piled into the car. I would love to re-connect with all of you when you are ready. Life goes by so quickly, and as we are all getting on in years ourselves, we best make an honest effort to reach out while we still have the chance. With deepest sympathy, Pam (Ross) Keenon [email protected] 864-607-4617 (Greenville,SC)

October 7, 2009

My thoughts and prayers are with you. There are no words to express my shock as I was being told of Polly's death. She was very supportive of my activity at Thrasher. The times we shared in making soup and even an April Fool's lunch. She encouraged me in my life with Multiple Sclerosis. She was a viabrant member of Thrasher. She definately held strong to her faith and maintained her vows to marriage, membership in the church. I could go on forever. Those of us who knew her were blessed by her. We need more like her. Today, she is with the Lord!
May God comfort you during this time.

Growing up, Polly was such a part of my life and my family's life. School, Girl Scouts, hanging out with my family. What a loss to see of her passing. My mother, Martha Thurman, and Polly were the best of friends up until Mom passed in 2007. The world is much emptier with Polly's passing but Heaven rejoices in her homegoing. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
