Pedro Hernandez Obituary

Published by Legacy on May 6, 2025.
Pedro "Pete" Hernandez was born on October 22, 1941, and raised in Houston, Texas. He passed away on May 5, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, curiosity, and more than a few bike parts no one else knows what to do with.
A skilled brick mason by trade, Pete could build a wall, fix a chain, and talk your ear off-all before lunch. He was passionate about collecting treasures (some might say "stuff"), restoring vintage bicycles, and repairing almost anything. If it was broken, Pete probably already had the part-and if he did not, he knew a guy at the flea market who did.
Known far and wide as the Bicycle King of Denver Harbor, Pete earned his crown not just by repairing bikes, but by doing it with love, grit, and an unmatched ability to find the right tool in a five-pound coffee container. He had a deep fondness for flea markets, where he could spot a deal at 50 yards and haggle like it was an Olympic sport. Well into his 70s and 80s, Pete crisscrossed Houston using his trusty metro bus passes, always exploring, always in motion, and always keeping his family on their toes with the constant question: "Where's Pete?"
Each morning, without fail, Pete walked to Jack in the Box or Whataburger for his daily coffee-served in a proper white cup, of course-where he'd sit, sip, and solve the world's problems with his friends. After his stroke, when he could no longer make his daily pilgrimage and moved to Kingwood to be closer to family, the crew at Jack in the Box noticed the empty seat and asked, "Where's Pete?" That question echoed everywhere he went because Pete made an impression and was always memorable.
Pete was preceded in death by his beloved son, Pete Hernandez Jr.; his mother, Sally Hernandez; and his sisters, Juanita Martinez and Tina Elizondo.
He is survived by his daughters, Tina Hernandez, Belinda and husband Dorwin Matchett, Deanna and husband Ronny Taylor, and Angelia and husband Daniel Bennett. He is also survived by his brothers, Gene Hernandez and Joe Hernandez; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and fellow coffee drinkers who will carry his memories and stories forward.
Today, we no longer ask, "Where's Pete?" We know exactly where he is. He's in heaven, probably trying to fix St. Peter's squeaky gate or asking where he can get a decent cup of coffee. He's surrounded by light, reunited with loved ones, and watching over us with that mischievous grin we all knew so well.
As we grieve, we also celebrate a life well-lived, a heart well-loved, and a man who turned ordinary days into adventures. Until we meet again, Pete, you will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished.
Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 12, 2025, at Lindale Assembly of God, 503 Reid Street, Houston, Texas.
