Peggy Nuckels Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hurst Scott Funeral Home on Oct. 14, 2025.
Peggy L. Nuckels, lovingly known by many as "Granny," gained her angel wings in the early hours of October 12, 2025, peacefully in her home.
She was the daughter of the late George Hand and Heloise Rowe Hand. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George "Poppy" Nuckels; and two children, Linda Sue Fitzgerald and James Robert "Tyke" Nuckels; and a brother, Jimmy Hand.
Peggy was born in Richlands, Virginia on April 13, 1933, living 92 wonderful years in Richlands, Virginia. Many will remember her for the years she spent behind the deli counter at Kroger. Most will remember her from the years she dedicated to selflessly volunteering at Richlands Elementary School until 2020. Granny spent her days at RES assisting teachers and staff, and touching the lives of countless students whom she loved dearly. Peggy was also a member of the Cedar Bluff Community Church and had most recently been attending Westfork Presbyterian with her family.
Peggy's surviving members include:
Her Son, Thomas "Danny" Nuckles of Richlands, Virginia
Grandchildren: Letisha Elkins and husband, Michael Keller of Richlands, Virginia; Letonya Altizer-Compton and husband, Mike of Richlands, Virginia; Johnathan "JJ" Altizer and wife, Christi of Cedar Bluff, Virginia; Rick Barton of Cedar Bluff, Virginia; Michelle and Russell Stoots and children of Hillsville, Virginia; Jennifer Hampton and children; Amanda Jesse and husband, Chris of Lebanon, Virginia
Great Grandchildren: Justin Keene and wife, Kelly of Richlands, Virginia; Rachel Elkins and fiancée, Tristan Carty of Pounding Mill, Virginia; Jaylyn Altizer, Elle Altizer, Elijah Cook, Aiden Cook, Walker Jesse, Cole Barton, Mollie Mullins, and Kai Barton
Great-Great Grandchildren: Reagan Keene and Bane Keene
Peggy had a host of other children in her life whom she loved dearly and considered her own.
Peggy was truly one of a kind lady. She never drove a car and walked almost everywhere she went. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time in her garden planting flowers, on her porch watching birds and butterflies, and out searching for four leaf clovers. She delighted in the presence of her family and enjoyed spending time with them as often as she could. She never knew a stranger and had countless special friends in her life. She devoted her life to Jesus, and she certainly displayed the qualities of a true servant of the Lord through her own personal ministries of loving, giving, and caring for others. She was a beloved daughter, sister, mother, friend, and, of course, Granny, to all who knew and loved her.
The family will be honoring Peggy's wishes by hosting friends at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 from 10:00am until 11:00am. Graveside services will follow the visitation at the Hankins Cemetery in Richlands, Virginia with Tracy McGlothlin officiating. Pallbearers will be: Bill Nuckels, Justin Keene, Rick Barton, Michael Keller, Mike Compton, and Tristan Carty. Honorary Pallbearer: Tom Sargent. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Richlands Elementary School, 392 Learning Lane, Richlands, VA 24641.
