Peggy Ann Watson, 90, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025, at Ridgeview Care Center in Oblong, IL. A woman of quiet strength and unwavering faith, Peggy's life was a reflection of humility, kindness, and a contentment that is rare in today's world.
Born on October 30, 1934, the only child of William Perry Drennen & Sylvia (Skaggs) Drennen, Peggy grew up in Oblong in modest circumstances that shaped her simple and grounded approach to life. A 1952 graduate of Oblong High School, Peggy enjoyed her youth, particularly skating at the local roller rink. It was there she met Jack Watson, who became the love of her life. They married on June 6, 1952, honeymooned in Texas, and built a life together in Oblong before moving to Robinson, where they raised their son, Mark. In the early 1970s, Peggy began working at Bertram's Pharmacy, running the cash register first on the square and later on Allen Street. Peggy loved the job, not for its routine, but for the people she had the opportunity to meet and connect with daily.
Though she enjoyed golfing trips with Jack in the Carolinas, Peggy's greatest joys were found close to home. She treasured time spent with her beloved granddaughter, Sophie, with whom she shared an inseparable bond. Whether picking her up from school, browsing the bookstore on the square, or simply being together, Peggy poured her love into every moment they shared. This love wasn't merely her own-it was a reflection of the love of God. A devoted member of New Hope Baptist Church, Peggy lived out her belief that all people are created in God's image, extending grace, kindness, and dignity to everyone she met. Her quiet strength and unwavering trust in Jesus were the foundation of the love she so freely gave, leaving a legacy of faith in action.
Peggy Watson didn't just talk about kindness, contentment, and faith-she lived them with every fiber of her being. Now, freed from the struggles of this world, she is whole again in the presence of her Savior. Her life stands as a beautiful testament to the hope of heaven, and her legacy invites us to reflect on the joy of a life rooted in faith. She leaves behind a quiet yet profound example of what it means to live for Christ, trusting fully in His promises and sharing His love with all she encountered.
Peggy is survived by her son & daughter-in-law, Mark & Deanna Watson; her beloved granddaughter, Sophie Watson; and her step-granddaughter, Katie & Seth Murphy, and their daughter, Alivia. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Jack E. Watson.
A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Monday, January 20th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. A service officiated by Celebrant Curt Goodwine will follow at 12:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the "Oblong Children's Christian Home", with envelopes available at the funeral home.
