Penny Spaulding Bliss, 73, passed away on Saturday, November 15, 2025, in Aiken, South Carolina.
Born in Burlington, Vermont, to Robert and Grace (Yandow) Spaulding, Penny spent more than 30 years working in various secretarial positions, where her dedication and friendly nature touched many lives.
On September 11, 1971, Penny married the love of her life, David J. Bliss, and together they raised two children. Though she lived most of her life in Massachusetts, Penny and David moved to Aiken, South Carolina, in 2017 following her retirement, embracing a slower pace of life and new adventures together.
Penny was known for her wonderful sense of humor, her generous spirit, and her deep religious faith, which guided her throughout her life. She enjoyed cooking, quilting, and spending time with her grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Family traditions and the Christmas season meant the world to Penny, and she filled those times with a special warmth, joy, and sense of togetherness. She also cherished the companionship of her sweet dog, Benji.
Penny is survived by her husband of 54 years, David; her daughter, Tammy Gumpright, and son-in-law, Daniel Gumpright; her son, David P. Bliss, and daughter-in-law, Heather Bliss; and her beloved grandchildren, T.J. Goodrich, and his fiance, Lyndsy Morrissette; Zachary Goodrich, Makayla Gumpright, Matthew Bliss, and Catherine Bliss. She is also survived by her sister, Susan Girouard, as well as several brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Robert Spaulding; her mother, Grace (Yandow) Philippon; her sister, Barbara Provencher; and her brother, Robert Spaulding.
She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, and her memory, rooted in love, faith, and cherished family traditions, will continue to bring comfort and peace to those she leaves behind.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at Old St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, 203 Park Ave., SE with The Very Reverend Richard Wilson Officiating. A reception will follow the service. Internment will take place at 3:00 PM at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery.
