Peter DeVries Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Miller Funeral Services - Houston on Dec. 22, 2025.
Peter Douglas Devries (Doug) was born in Worcester, Massachusetts and shared his last smile in Houston, Texas on December 18, 2025.
He attended Calvin College in Michigan, earning a B.A. in mathematics.
After graduation Doug joined the U.S. Air Force, serving as Captain of a military training detachment. Completing his four-year stint with the military, he then commenced his career as a Field Representative with the Social Security Administration. Doug always claimed he made his life more "socially secure" by marrying his wife Jan (Janet).
After retirement he did extensive volunteer work at Brazos Bend State Park and during tax season, volunteered with the AARP tax program assisting individuals prepare their taxes.
Doug was passionate about trains and was unique in the fact he was thrilled when he was stopped by one when en route to somewhere. He claimed this gave him a wonderful opportunity to see and study each car in close proximity. Doug was a marathon runner, completing three marathons; loved nature and animals.
He resided in Angleton, Texas for numerous years before having to relocate to Houston to be near the medical center due to brain cancer.
Doug is survived by his wife, Jan (Janet); sister-in-law, Marion Johnson; sister, Jane McNabb of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and his beloved cat, Snuggles.
Doug will be cremated. There will be no services.

So sorry to hear about Doug's passing. Grew up with him in Whitinsville. Graduated with him. I know he's with our Lord.

I am saddened to learn of Doug's passing in December, and I just learned of it yesterday. Doug and I were close friends and classmates all through grade school and high school in Whitinsville, MA. and I have been trying to contact him or Jan since I learned of his cancer. I offer my sincere condolences to all his family, and I pray that God will give you comfort and peace going forward. The friend I knew was a wonderful person, and I'm sure that was true throughout his adult life, too. I am sorry I didn't remain in touch with him after high school, but thought about our days together many times. Blessings to each of you!

Jan - I'm so sorry to hear of Doug's passing. You will be n my prayers. My sister and I secretly called you and Doug "the sunshine family" when we were little because you were always offering kind words and a helping hand though out our childhood. Mr. Sunshine's smile is a bright memory.
