Peter Edward Dougherty

Peter Edward Dougherty, 78, of Neptune, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at his home on January 18, 2026, surrounded by love. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 18, 1947, Peter lived a life defined by service, dedication, and deep compassion for others. A longtime resident of Monmouth County, he made Neptune his home for many decades.

Peter grew up in New York and proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army, receiving an honorable discharge in 1972. Following his military service, he built an impressive record of educational and professional achievement. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Rutgers University in 1996 and later completed his Master of Social Work in 2002.

Peter's career reflected his strong work ethic and commitment to helping others. He spent 36 years with The New York Times and the Mailers Union, contributing to one of the nation's most respected institutions. After earning his M.S.W., he became a licensed clinical social worker, dedicating ten years to supporting individuals struggling with substance use at Meridian Jersey Shore Medical Center before retiring in 2018. His compassion extended beyond his profession-he volunteered in emergency rooms, served with the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

In his personal life, Peter found joy in simple and meaningful pleasures. He loved traveling, spending time at the beach, walking his beloved dog Miles, and enjoying great Italian food, a good steak, or a memorable meal at a favorite restaurant. Above all, he cherished time with his family, extended family, and many friends. His warmth, humor, and generosity touched everyone who knew him.

Peter was a devoted member of Mt. Carmel Church in Asbury Park, New Jersey. He was predeceased by his parents, Lucille and Daniel Dougherty.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Mary Anne Ashby-Dougherty; his three children, Jean Marie Alban (James) of Robbinsville, NJ, Katherine Tiller (Jason) of Holmdel, NJ, and Peter Ryan Dougherty (Christie) of San Diego, CA; his stepdaughter, Mercedes McElrath of Tinton Falls, NJ; nine cherished grandchildren: Aidan, Brynn, Malone, Cara, Jason, Jack, Rory, Phoenix, and Zaire and four siblings: Lorraine Borthwick, Margaret Lang, Roseanne Dutton and Danny Dougherty. He is also survived by a host of extended family members, friends, and all those whose lives he touched with kindness
