Peter Fagg Obituary

Published by Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home on Jun. 17, 2009.
Peter Fagg, III

In death, as in life, Peter Fagg, III is a strong light in this world. Mr. Fagg was born on September 26, 1928 in Queens, New York. He was raised by his loving parents Ken and Marion Fagg. He also had a twin brother Donald Fagg who was his closet friend.

Mr. Fagg was raised in Sunnyside, Queens and Chappaqua, New York and attended Horace Greeley High School. He often spoke with great respect about his teachers there.

Mr. Fagg continued his educations at Middlebury College, M.I.T., Georgetown University and Syracuse University and earned two Master's Degrees in Engineering and Astronomy. He was also a veteran of the United States Army.

Mr. Fagg married Janet M. Szarvas and together they had Christopher, Vivian and Dawn. They were happily married for fifty-seven years on May 31st.

Mr. Fagg worked his entire adult life for IBM. For a number of years Mr. Fagg was the Executive Director of Research in Fishkill, New York and he also managed sites in Germany, England and Japan. He was integrally involved with the development of the IBM 360/370 the first supercomputer in existence.

Mr. Fagg loved to play tennis, enjoyed skiing, traveling and swimming in the ocean off of the coast of Eastern Long Island. He also loved making a beautiful garden.

After retiring from IBM, he received his Master Gardener Certificate from Cary Arboretum and could almost always be found in the garden. He enjoyed cross pollinating various flowers to come up with new breeds to grow and share with friends.

He also had a fascination with biology and chemistry which culminated in a paper he wrote on the storage of human memory which he believes is stored in the brain's DNA not in the synapses as is commonly thought. The name of the published paper is DNA as the Long Term Memory Storage Cell in the Human Brain.

Mr. Fagg adopted a family in Greece which he supported and visited throughout his life.

Mr. Fagg also was an active member of AARP and for many years helped local people complete and save money by correctly completing their tax returns.

Mr. Fagg loved classical music and often attended concerts as Vassar College. He also often went to and supported the Itzak Perlman Camp for young musicians located in Eastern Long Island.

Mr. Fagg is survived by his wife, three children, six grandchildren and his Greek Foster daughter.

No services are planned.
