Peter Ingram Obituary

PETER JAMES INGRAM, 74, of Huntington, WV, passed away July 1, 2024 with his family by his side.
Pete had a sarcastic sense of humor, cynical nature and a trademark exasperated "look." A conversation with Pete was always going to be comforting and/or hilarious.
He grew up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where he acquired his love of bagels and pizza. He loved being a kid in NYC, going to Yankee games, riding his bike to watch the Twin Towers being built and playing hide-and-seek in Macy's.
Pete came to Huntington from New York in 1968 to attend Marshall University. He was a lifelong baseball fan who loved the New York Yankees, except when they lost, at which point "they're dead to me." He played baseball at Marshall as a pitcher for Coach Jack Cook. He also took great interest in Huntington Little League and spent many hours on the field with friends Eddie Paul and Jimmy Moss, and he coached teams even for years after his children were grown. He was also an impressive tennis player and tennis "stage dad" and coach. He was a regular at the YMCA where he made many treasured friendships.
Pete was a medical social worker at Cabell Huntington Hospital for 40 years. He had a passion for helping people and empowering them in confusing and often sad situations. He believed in social justice and valued helping others.
He retired years ago but never stopped helping friends and family navigate problems big and small, from medically complex situations to car troubles. He never let anyone buy anything before he read reviews and checked for deals. He was an encyclopedia for home maintenance. He could always tell you what's on sale at Lowe's and when to buy the deeply discounted (and likely dead) plants. He stalked traffic cams and webcams wherever he knew his children would be. He gave years of service as "cabana boy" to his wife and her pool buddies.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Cy and Edna Schleifer and James Ingram. He was survived by his wife and partner of 48 years, Jo Dee Gottlieb, son Joe Ingram, daughter and son-in-law Corey and John Mendez, and granddaughter Rosie Mendez, who loved her "Pocky" very much. Also brothers Scott (Andi) Ingram and Todd Ingram, sisters Joan, Phyllis, and Liz, and sister-in-law Linda Gottlieb. The family would like to give special acknowledgment to Diana Shi, Cindy Winger, Sheila Stephens, Mary Sue Christian, and many other friends.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Pete's honor may be made to Team for WV Children, Bethesda Cares, Housing Up, or a social justice organization of your choice.
Celebration of life will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday Aug. 18, 2024 at Temple B’nai Sholom (949 10th Ave., Huntington, WV).

Deepest sympathy to JoDee and family members. My first meeting of Pete was back at Anderson-Newcomb, later Stone & Thomas. He worked in men´s department and he was good to work with, though this has been probably 52 years ago. He also was my neighbor on Enslow Blvd. for 10 years or so. Later on, I started working at CHH, and there he was again. Always a fine, decent man who loved sports and staying active. Will miss you, Pete. Truly a pleasure to know you through the years.

I first met Pete in 1975 when we both worked at the then Department of Welfare here in Huntington. We became fast friends. With the passage of time career changes, marriage and parenthood we both were called on to wrangle with those life challenges. Pete worked with hundreds of patients and their families during his career at Cabell Huntington,he did it with kindness and caring. I will share with you what could be a myth but I choose to believe it. Marshall was playing Ohio University and Pete was called upon as a relief pitcher, in a uniform that was two sizes too big, and struck out Mike Shcmidt the future Hall of Famer. OK so about now I can see that Pete is rolling his eyes at this as only he could do. Condolences to Jo Dee and the kids. Pete was my friend. I will miss him.

Lynda and I are so sad and sorry for your loss, Jo Dee and family. He was so special in so many ways. I was lucky to be his tennis doubles partner for quite a few years. Good memories of Pete will live on in all of our hearts.

When working at CHH, I would see Pete pretty much every day, we would see who could be most sarcastic and cynical, I´ve lost a very dear friend and so have many others. He went far to help others in need.

He shall greatly be missed. It just won't be the same not seeing him with JoDee walking around Donald and helping Linda with her plants.

Pete was the social worker on the oncology floor where I worked for many years. We could always count on him to take care of problems we needed help with. He was wonderful to work with.

Dear Jo Dee, Corey, and Joe

What a beautiful tribute to Pete. Right on target with all of my memories of him. In spite of his sarcastic demeanor (which I loved), he was incredibly compassionate and soooo proud of his children. I am so saddened by this but am so happy and honored that I got to work with and learn from him.
My thoughts are with you all

Our MU Social Work department hosted Robert Meripol (son of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg) for a presentation. It was at a dinner that Jody and i held for Robert that I first met Pete. I'm a West Virginia native and Pete was surprised that I lived in lower Manhattan in the "Stuytown" apartments where he grew up. We discovered that we had lived near the same "playground" and talked about all things New York - one of my favorite subjects! Pete taught Jason and I where to get the best pizza in Huntington - among other things:) - What a great guy! the world is a better place for having him in it.

I am so sorry that I never got to know Pete very well, but I know he was a wonderful husband and father. Reading all the stories about Pete helps me to know him a little better. I am so sorry to JoDee, Corey, Joey and Linda. I love you all very much. May his memories that you cherish bring you peace.
