Brother Peter James Mahoney, CFX (Bro. Neil)
Bro. Pete (long favored over Peter) died at Treyton Oak Towers in Louisville on Friday, Oct. 24, 2025, following a brief period in hospice.
He was born in New Jersey on May 30, 1932, to Thomas and Irene (Lennon) Mahoney who predeceased him along with his sister, Nancy Souhrada. Bro. Pete is survived by his sister, Irene deGrondpre and his brother, Thomas. He grew up in New York City, joined the Xaverian Brothers in 1951, and was a Xaverian Brother for 74 years. He held a BA from The Catholic University of America and a MA from Notre Dame.
After undergraduate college, Bro. Pete taught in MA in 1957 -1959 followed by years teaching and other ministries in KY. From 1959 to 1962 he taught at St. Joseph Prep in Bardstown, KY followed by Flaget HS to 1974 when the school closed. He then became a college campus minister in Louisville and a dorm rector at Notre Dame from 1978 to 1982. Then began a series of social ministries in KY and mainly in VA until he retired in 2008. In 1999 to 2001 he also served in Haiti. Recognizing his advancing age and mobility limitations, Bro. Pete moved to the Xaverian Ryken House in Louisville in 2017 and moved with the brothers to Louisville's Treyton Oak Towers in 2021.
Bro. Pete will be cremated and interred at St. Xavier HS on Friday, Oct. 31 at 10 AM. A Memorial will be held at Treyton Oak Towers on the following Friday, Nov. 7 at 10 AM.
