I served with Pete at Dover AFB. I was the ranking NCO in the pharmacy 1976-1983. He was the best Officer I served under. He was fair, good-humored, and I considered him a friend as well as my superior. Was thinking of Pete today and searched the internet. Found his obituary. Wish I had looked before. I now realize we lived closer than I thought, and shared a passion for the Red Sox. I regret not being able to renew out friendship.

I've lit many candles in my life. Real candles, candles on canvas--and candles of the heart, when I didn't have an actual candle to light nor a canvas upon which to paint one.
I light a candle today on the internet--a new medium--not for my childhood friend Peter--who has communed with his God, but for his family who is feeling the pain of his departure.

Peter, you were always a brother I could look up to. Always heard of your goodness and likeability being just 2 years behind in school. You brought real depth and joy to family at all times. We will miss having you around but will always have you with us. Continuing our love, Jim

My sister Carole just told me of Peter's passing today.
We three, Carole, me (Sharon) and Jim grew up with the Merchant boys (Peter, Jim and John).
Alma was involved with boy scouts while her husband was away on air force duties. My mother was involved with girl scouts.
They lived at the end of the street and we a few houses up. We, as kids, spent many days exploring the woods behind the Merchant house and enjoyed what kids like to do--be free.
I remember that the Marcel's ate at 4 P.M., the Davies at 5 P.M. and the Merchants at 6 P.M. We kids knew how to work around our parents' schedules to come out and play. When the street lights came on we all went home. That's the way it was on Arthur Street. We were the East Springfield gang --the Arthur Street gang--but a gang absent any bad will towards anyone. We just enjoyed being kids, and all that entails.
Everybody in the neighborhood marveled at how we kids would come together and plan a Valentine party, or a backyard circus, always being in the moment. Somehow, and I really don't know how, we all were confident in who we were. I guess we had the East Springfield gene in us--that nobody could take away, and nobody better try.
With loving memories, childhood memories, of all of us growing up together in a safe place, with parents who cared, with not much except their ingenuity, and ours, to support that claim.
Struggles throughout those years and in later years? Yes. And who doesn't have them?
I wonder as I get older when my time will come. But when it does I will remember as I remember today, that early on, when we were just kids exploring the world in the woods behind the Merchant house, that I had something few kids have, a place to feel safe while exploring the world of nature--soil, plants, frogs, trees, humans, friends.
Alma, and my mother too, were all about that--all the East Springfield mothers were about that.
And that's something that nobody can ever take away from us East Springfielders. We were bred strong and we lived strong, enjoying all of nature. It's just the way it was in East Springfield, Massachusetts--back in the day.
I am happy to see the photo of Pete Merchant smiling from the side bar as I write. It's been so long since I saw your face.
To Pete's family, the Davies family is with you. From Arthur Street to all the places the world has taken all of us, PEACE.

Peter led a great fun-filled, well traveled life. I was glad to be part of his life. We were both stationed in New Hampshire together and then luck had it, stationed together at Ramstein, Germany. His continuing friendship was very special to me. He always spoke lovingly of his family. Peter will be missed.

Peter, Your service to our country and love of family, friends, travel and other cultures gave you a "quilt" of experiences that shaped you into a humble, tolerant and kind man with deep thoughts and a camera's eye for beauty. I was lucky to know you. ~~ Crista, your sister-in-law
