Peter Montsma, age 93, of Waupun, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2025.
Peter was born on April 5, 1932, in Jouswier, Friesland, The Netherlands, the son of Edward (Edzerd) and Bernice (Baukja Vander Veen) Montsma. He was the sixth of twelve children. In May of 1947, Peter immigrated with his family to the United States, settling in the Delavan, Wisconsin area. He worked alongside his father farming before beginning a lifelong career as a carpenter.
On August 2, 1957, Peter was united in marriage to Joan Kemink at First Christian Reformed Church in Waupun, where he remained a faithful member during his lifetime. Together, Peter and Joan built a loving home and family, rooted in faith. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and a strong Christian example to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Peter owned and operated Montsma Construction for many years, leaving behind a legacy of craftsmanship and integrity. Even in retirement, he continued to use his skills by helping with projects at Central Wisconsin Christian School, including Bargains Galore and school renovations.
He and Joan enjoyed spending many winters in Winter Haven, Florida, where Peter could often be found golfing and enjoying fellowship with friends and family. His faith was central to his life, and he served his church in many roles, including as Elder and Deacon, and participated in many Bible studies. Notably, he was the longest-serving member of the Building Committee, dedicating over 60 years of service.
Peter is survived by his children: Bryan (Noreen) Montsma, Dan (Gladys) Montsma, and Katie (Gary) DeJager; seven grandchildren: Todd (Ellie) Montsma, Amie (Tony) Riel, Justin (Naomi) Montsma, Ashley Montsma, Austin Montsma, Alexis (fiancé Jackson Haase) DeJager, and Aubryn DeJager; and seven great-grandchildren: Shelby Fry, Noelle, Jude, Luke, and Job Riel, Luella Montsma, and Emery Montsma. He is further survived by his sister Alice Heeringa and brother-in-law William Kelder, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Joan in 2008; his parents; his parents-in-law, Elmer and Kate Kemink; his brothers Howard (Sylvia), John (Eva), Gus, Ted (Thelma), and Berton; his sisters Shirley (Arie) Terpstra, Theresa (Harry) Vegter, Martha (Gerald) Ter Steege, Hinke, and Edna Kelder; and brother-in-law Henry Heeringa and sister-in-law Joyce Vriezen.
A man of deep faith, steady hands, and a generous heart, Peter’s life was a testimony of God’s faithfulness.
Visitation for Peter will take place on Friday, January 2, 2026 at First Christian Reformed Church from 12-2 p.m. The funeral service will take place on Friday, January 2, 2026 at church at 2 p.m. Burial will take place at Alto Cemetery.
