Peter Folsom Smith

I got to know Peter when I worked on the staff of Senator Dick Clark of Iowa from 1973-1975. I was a most junior of "spear carriers" and I reported to Vicki. Through her, I learned much about such public issues as environmental protection, conservation, and the then emerging matter of energy policy. I, of course, got to know Peter, Senator Clark's press secretary. He was quiet, no nonsense, droll. He was also a professional who had little patience for those who pretended to be professional or for strutting peacocks. He respected most of the reporters with whom he regularly dealt with and they respected him as an honest, hardworking press contact. Pete was also very funny.

The memorial service will be on January 31 at 11 am at Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church, 100 West Washington Street, Shepherdstown, WV.

As a working journalist, I valued Peter as a resource. His news releases were always top-notch - timely, clearly written and succinct. As a member of the Jefferson County community, I felt extremely grateful that Peter and Victoria chose to settle here. Peter was such a pleasure to talk with, always, and he made such a difference to so many important community organizations. His positive impact on our community will go on but he is greatly missed.

Peter was a true gentleman. He was wonderful to sit with an have a cup of coffee and discuss the world we live in.

Peter Smith was a major community resource for the town of Shepherdstown. He worked without tiring for many community organizations including Rotary and to preserve the natural pristine value of Jefferson County. His wife Victoria (Vickie) stood by him during the good times and the bad times. Peter will be missed. May his good work continue.

Victoria - as a former resident of Shepherdstown, I´m sending love and support to you and your family at this time of loss. He´s one of the key people that made Shepherdstown the incredible community that it is; his impact was broad, and will continue on.
