It is with heavy hearts, but with deep gratitude for a life well lived, that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, and patriarch, Peter Stahl (Pesach ben Moshe). Peter went to dwell in the House of Hashem on November 8, 2025.
Peter was born in New York on April 28, 1938, days after Germany annexed Austria and a few months before the Kristallnacht Pogrom. His parents were Maurice Stahl and Lillian Stahl (née Cohen). Peter married the love of his life, Phyllis Diane Stahl (née Cohen) (Pasha D'Vorah bas Yosef V'Sheinah) on February 26, 1967 and loved her deeply for 56 years until her untimely passing on October 28, 2023.
Peter and Diane proudly raised three beautiful children, Kevin, David, and Melissa, in the heartland of America. Peter was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend. He was predeceased by his sister, Suzanne, whom he cherished.
Peter instilled in his children, grandchildren, and nephews a deep sense of commitment, hard work, and determination. There will never be a more ardent and committed cheerleader on family sports events than our beloved Papa! Peter loved to travel. He had a deep curiosity for how people around the world lived, worshiped, and celebrated. He loved to dine where the locals ate, to communicate in the vernacular, and to be generous.
Peter's spiritual journey was central to his life. Peter and Diane were long-standing members of Congregation Tifereth Israel in Columbus, Ohio. During the last decades of his life, Peter developed an even deeper spiritual connection with Judaism. He began gathering at "Sip and Schmooze" to learn more about Jewish teachings in a casual setting and also developed lasting friendships. He became a regular participant at temple (5th row, left hand side, facing the bema). On May 30th, 2020, at the ripe age of 82, Peter had his Bar Mitzvah. This was one of the most consequential events of his entire life. In times of celebration and trial alike, his Jewish faith informed his gratitude, courage, and final peace.
Peter is survived by his three children, Kevin, David, and Melissa (Damro) and by their spouses, Karen, Tattiana, and Nathan, respectively. Peter is also survived by his nephews, Joshua L. Stahl, Colonel, USAF, and CAPT Jonathan M. Stahl, US Navy (Retd)., and by their respective families.
Peter's legacy of curiosity, adventure, and sense of wonder will continue through his loving grandchildren, Benjamin, Ethan, Jacob, Eliana (Ellie), Noah, Eli, and Samantha (Sammy), who deeply mourn his physical departure, but celebrate his life.
As we bid farewell to our beloved Peter, we remember the teachings from his Torah portion, Deuteronomy 16-17: "no one should appear before G-d empty-handed: Each of [us] must bring a gift in proportion to the way the L-rd our G-d has blessed [us]." May your descendants be a blessing to others as you have been to us, and may you dwell in the House of G-d, together with your beloved Diane, for the length of time. We love you, always, Papa!
A funeral service will be held at Epstein Memorial Chapel, 3232 E. Main St., Columbus, Ohio, on Thursday, November 13, 2025 at 12:00 noon (Zoom link below). Interment will follow at New Tifereth Israel Cemetery. Shiva observance will be announced.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Peter's memory may be made to Congregation Tifereth Israel (link below).
