Peter G. Xelas

We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of Peter G. Xelas who lived to the age of 96. Peter was a loving husband to the late Anneliese, loving father to Alexandra, Cynthia, Peter George, loving father-in-law to Julia, and loving papou to Nicholas, Erica, Tyler, Tiffany, and Amanda.
Peter was born Praxitelis Georgios in Neapoli, Crete, Greece in 1928. He was a tank commander in the Greek Army in the late 1940's and at the age of 26 immigrated to the United States. He settled in New York and from then on was a permanent member of the Astoria community for over sixty years. He became a bridge painter and soon met his wife Anneliese. Soon after he became a father and started his own contracting business. During this time he was a dedicated member of the Greek-American Soccer Club for over sixty years and served as the club manager and eventually president. In his retirement Peter enjoyed life as a grandfather, gardening, and traveling around the U.S. with his wife to destinations such as Florida, Alaska, and Hawaii. He was a devoted member of the St. Demetrios Church for many years. He will be deeply missed.
