Philip Axelson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 28, 2023 to Jan. 10, 2024.
Reverend Philip M. Axelson, 85 of Warren, Rhode Island, a former longtime Barrington, RI resident, passed away peacefully into the presence of the Lord in the early hours of December 27, 2023, surrounded by family. He was the loving husband of Jonna Beth (Christman) Axelson for over 62 years, and they lived a full, adventurous, and faith-filled life together.

Born on March 19, 1938, in Wenatchee, Washington, Phil was the son of Amsden and Pearl (Steiner) Axelson and raised in Bremerton, WA with his sister, Myrna (Anderson). He graduated from Bremerton East High School and then studied at Seattle Pacific College (SPC). He spent summer breaks working at fisheries in southeastern Alaska and upon his return to SPC, he wooed his sister's roommate, Jonna, with his nice car and rugged Alaskan tales. They married in 1961 and moved to Pasadena, California where he pursued a call to ministry, working in youth ministry and earning his Masters of Divinity at Fuller Seminary. Jonna gave birth to their first child, Camila on his graduation day.

Phil served in pastoral roles at churches across the United States: starting in Sacramento, CA, where their second child, David was born, heading back to Phil's Washington roots in Bremerton, WA where their youngest, Peter was born, next to Seattle, WA where Phil was ordained to Word and Sacrament through the Evangelical Covenant Church in 1968. Their next stop was Yakima, WA with their three young children in tow. In 1977, Phil and Jonna moved their family to St. Charles, Missouri to lead a church plant, Maranatha. After seven years, they moved again, heading to New England where Phil became the Pastor at the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) in Riverside, Rhode Island. They found a strong church family there and their adult children all settled in the surrounding area. Phil also helped initiate local startup churches including Christ Church in East Greenwich. In 1994, Phil and Jonna set out on a final adventure moving to Anchorage, Alaska where Phil served his last Pastoral role at First Church Anchorage and planted another church, Eagle River Covenant. After a decade in Alaska, he retired and they returned to the home they'd built years earlier on Hundred Acre Cove in Barrington, Rhode Island.

Phil often touted that he and Jonna were a great package, crediting his wife's musical talents that amplified their ministry at the churches they served. Phil too, had a knack for music with his bellowing singing voice that could be heard from any pew in the church. He also played the trombone. Phil was beloved by the congregations he served and known for the way he brought local churches and pastors together. Phil served on several Covenant regional and national boards. He especially enjoyed his years on the Evangelism and Prayer Commission and singing with the Ministers' Chorus. He also served in various roles at summer bible camps including Alpine, Mission Springs, Lily Del Dune, Covenant Beach, and Pilgrim Pines. Phil and Jonna were great travelers, road-tripping all over North America, Israel, and Europe. Phil loved to hike, being sure he was always the first to the top of the mountain, and was a great fisherman, later passing down his skill to his eldest grandson.

In his retirement, Phil enjoyed living close to his three children and six grandchildren, taking in the beautiful views of Hundred Acre Cove, becoming an active member again at the Riverside Covenant Church (RCC), volunteering as an usher at the Providence Performing Arts Center, telling animated stories reflecting on his adventurous years in Alaska, and spending Tuesday evenings with his local grandchildren.

In 2018, Phil and Jonna moved once more to join the Bagy Wrinkle Cove neighborhood in Warren, where Phil often joked they belonged since they'd become "baggy and wrinkled". There, he enjoyed the coastal setting, walks around the neighborhood, which over time took great effort, and frequent visits from family, including his five young great-grandchildren, whom he adored watching play. His final days included family-filled Christmas celebrations, many calls from loved ones afar, and a serenade from the RCC Men's Chorus, which he was previously a member of.

Phil was a devoted husband, brother, father, and "Papa Phil". He will be remembered for his legacy of cross-country ministry, his repertoire of stories-often made more exciting by his tendency to exaggerate, his big appetite, some of his taglines like "amen, amen and amen!", and his love for carrot cake, Starbucks chai lattes, oatmeal, and cherry chapstick. His voice will be greatly missed during family singalongs. Most of all, family and friends will remember Phil's unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior.

Phil lived a full and meaningful life, touching many lives, especially those close to him. He is survived by his wife, Jonna Axelson; his children Camila Dimarco of Barrington, RI; David Axelson of Riverside, RI; and Peter (Gretchen) Axelson of Marstons Mills, Massachusetts; his grandchildren: Carisa (Eric) Schultheis, Axel (Kendra) Hogberg, Nella (Dennis) Falcione, Caleb Axelson, Anna Axelson, and Yalith Axelson; great-grandchildren: Walter, Otto, Ida, Mabel, and Wilfred; his sister Myrna (Steve) Anderson, and other beloved extended relatives.

A memorial service to celebrate Phil's life will be held at the Riverside Covenant Church on March 23, 2024, at 11:00 am.

Contributions to honor Phil are appreciated and may be sent to the Riverside Covenant Church, 165 Rounds Avenue, Riverside, RI 02915, or Alaska Christian College, 35109 Royal Pl, Soldotna, AK 99669.

Phil was my youth pastor at First Presbyterian, Bremerton. I came to Christ under his ministry there. At the time, I didn't know it but looking back I needed Phil's quiet yet firm demeanor and outlook as a young believer. He was one of the reasons I went into pastoral ministry. And Jonna Beth was right there also. Several times, my brother Mark and I spent the night at their home because our car would break down getting home and we drove quite a distance to be a part of the youth group at First Pres. Both Phil and Jonna Beth had servant-hearts who made so many of us know we were welcome both in their home and in the household of faith. I am ever grateful. Phil, I look forward to seeing you on the other side of eternity.

When Nancy and I served in Bethel, Ak, a bush village, we were always welcomed when coming to town. In fact, the church there allowed us to store our car at their parking lot. Phil and Jonna made Anchorage First Covenant feel like being in a bush church in the city! What a dynamic duo!

My favorite memories are two. The look on his face when he first saw me with my now wife ,Robin, when we were on our first date and then the happiness on his face when he gave Robin away at our wedding. Thank you Phil.I love you, my brother in Christ.

Our love and prayers of comfort go out to Jonna and family as we have just learned of Phil's Home-Going via Facebook today. We have been so blessed to have known Phil and Jonna through the many times they hosted us in their homes over the years when we were stateside between overseas missions service. What an amazing couple who have demonstrated clearly and generously their love for God and for their "neighbor". Their commitment to support missions and missionaries has been a tremendous blessing on MANY lives around the world. How very great must be the reward that Phil now enjoys in the presence of the Lord!

The world has lost a wonderful MAN OF GOD who showed GOD'S love to everyone he met. We had a bible study with him on the book of Revelation=A VERY TOUGH BOOK TO UNDERSTAND but he did a wonderful job of explaining it to us. Jonna Linda and I are praying for you and the whole family.

We were blessed to have Phil and Jonna as a part of our Christmann family. Over the years, they visited us in Minnesota and Arizona. I recall getting up early to start breakfast and to find Phil at the kitchen table with a bowl of oatmeal and his Bible. What a beautiful way to start his day! He was an inspiration to all of us

The relationship I've had with Pastor Phil and the Axelson family is a significant weaving of bright colors in the tapestry of my life. Over forty years of solid biblical sermons, church potluck dinners, Bible studies, choir, fellowship events, and deep friendship are all woven for eternity. One of my favorite places was the Axelson home in Barrington overlooking a peaceful cove where Pastor Phil and I would check out the birds, ducks, discuss the egrets' fishing activities, and eat wonderful food made with love. The visit my mother and I made to Alaska when he and Jonna ministered there will remain one of the highlights of my life, right up there with their return to RI. "Bagy Wrinkle" also became a warm haven because love resides there. I'm sure there is a big party happening in Heaven right now with Pastor Phil relating his favorite stories to loved ones he hasn't seen in a while. Amen and amen.

God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. I was a Riverside covenant member 1978-1997 and loved Phil´s sermons, integrity and played BB with sons Dave and Pete plus tennis with Dave, a musician like his Dad. What a legacy for his family.

Phil and I go way back to the 1950's in Bremerton. We sang together and hung out with our group from the First Presbyterian Church. He and his family had us over for dinner after church on Sunday on many of times and shared many a prank at Twin Harbors State Park Church camp. He was always a friend, and we shared many questions about our faith. Bless your whole family at this loss. I have a few pictures somewhere. I will look for them. I regret we lost touch in our "Mid-lives", but the memories are always there. Dick Hawes

My sincerest condolences to the Axelson family... It was a surprise to read that you were only in the St. Charles area for 7 short years because Pastor Phil and the family were such a significant part of my late grade school and early/mid teen years that it seemed like a much longer time to me. The boys were like older brothers and were definite role models for me. Jonna took care of me like one of her own (haircuts, trombone accompaniments when Pastor Phil and I played our trombones together, and frothy orange juice made in the blender when I spent a week at their house while my fam was on vacation ). I treasure those memories and will always remember the positive influence my Maranatha church family had on me during my formative years. Rest in peace, Pastor Phil. I expect that he's hearing "Well done, my good and faithful servant" about now.
