Philip came to Osceola County from Birmingham with his parents, settling on the north side of Lake Cecile prior to the 1957-58 school year. I lived on the south side of the lake, and we became immediate friends. Shortly after, his dad bought a 16 ft. runabout with a 10 H.P. motor. For the next two summers we skied almost every day. When we weren't skiing, we were hunting or fishing in the area. Adjacent to the lake was a smaller lake known as Bonnett Lake where hundreds of doves roosted in the scrub oaks around the lake. We were both good athletes and played football and baseball together through high school. I kept a fishing boat at my mother's house on the lake and one day in the early 80's I was fishing in front of the Flater home and watched as they demolished his home. I watched for a while and thought about Philip and all we had done together and then moved on. I regret not staying in touch with "Flip", as his mother called him. He was a good friend and a gentleman.
