Susie, I can't imagine the depth of your
loss. I remember when your love affair began all those many years ago in Thurmont. I admire Phil for his courageous battle and know it was as hard for him to say goodbye as it was for you to lose him. May you be embraced by the love of your children and grandchildren, which will keep his
memory alive forever.

I met Phil and Susan in June of 2009 at NIH where Phil and I were undergoing the same transplant procedure. Even though I knew Phil for a short time he left a huge, positive and unforgetable impression upon me and my wife. I will always remember his bright smile and positive attitude. He was truely blessed with a wonderful, loving and beautiful wife and family. My family and I offer all our prayers, thoughts and condolences to Phil's family. I am very sad for his loss.

Phil and I met back in 1975 at North Anna. We managed to break as much as we fixed back then and it’s a wonder we were able to keep our jobs. Our paths separated over the years but whenever they did cross it was always a joy to talk to him about his work and especially his family. I will always remember Phil’s eyes would light up when he spoke of his family. He truly loved Susan and his kids. There was still that twinkle of mischief that we shared in the past. We will truly miss Phil, as will all that had the honor to meet and share time with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Susan and your family.

Phil truly emboddied the word perseverance. It did not matter how things were looking, in Phil's eyes they were always looking up. His enthusiasm for life was something to be admired, and we can all learn to look at the positive things in life thanks to Phil.

I'll miss hearing about his children and grandchildren and seeing his beaming smile as I walked past his desk. He will surely be missed by his North Anna family. God bless his family but may they find comfort in his memory.

Phil and Susan became part of the family when Jessica married my nephew, David, on May 8, 2004. I remember thinking how lucky we all were to welcome the Hahn family in to the mix. We have shared joy and sorrow during the years which has brought us even closer together. I will think about Phil with such sweet admiration and love. I will always remember him behind the camera capturing special moments and with his running shoes on as he, David, Jessica and Chris ran together. I am lucky to have known him, even for such a short period of time. He will be missed and never forgotten.

It made me think what a good DAD he must be. God Bless his family.

Phil taught me the lesson that in order to improve you need to go up against or hangout with someone that is better then you in talent. That was a lesson I learned many times when we ran together, and a lesson I can apply in other areas of my life. I will miss Phil and think of him when I'm on the road running.

In 2003, I lost my father in a tragic airline crash. After the service was performed at the church, I stood up to escort my mother out. I didn't make a lot of eye contact with many people as we left. But, there was one set of eyes I did lock on to and it warmed my heart to see Phil sitting near the back row of the church as we exited.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

Building a tree house for Chris, moving a piano for Susie, carpooling, moving from one house to another, talking about family, watching James Taylor. It was all fun now that I look back on it. We have all been blessed to know and work with Phil. He fought the sickness like no one else I have ever seen; never giving up and hoping to help cure someone else. Unselfish love for his fellow man. God Bless YOU ALL.
