Philip Pate Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 31, 2026.
A life well lived. . . Philip Eugene Pate passed away at home peacefully and calmly on Wednesday, January 28th.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Allyson, children Adam (wife Lisa and granddaughter, Lilah) of Vermont, Jonathan of California, and Rebecca of Winchester. Philip adored Allyson and she adored him. Together they personified a marriage built on love and respect. As a proud dad and grandfather, he was warm, affectionate, not a helicopter parent - oh, to the contrary, and he basked in their successes!

Philip (don't call him Phil!) is also survived by siblings Alfred "Smitty" Pate (Patricia) of Western Springs, IL, Katie Anderson (John) of Glen Allen, VA, Susan Catlin (David) of Kennesaw, GA, and several nieces and nephews, and Robin Kulwin (Cliff), Allyson's favorite sister ever, of Montclair, NJ. He was pre-deceased by his parents Maj. Chauncey Carlisle and Mary Catherine Pate, and stepson, Daniel. And there are his friends, oh so many friends far and wide, among them, the legendary southern restaurant, Bonnie Blue!

Philip was brilliant, and had extraordinarily varied interests, an avid reader, the glue for so many in the community who he liked to say he stuck together, an exemplary community volunteer, loved to travel and learn (or stumble through) languages. As the child of an air force pilot, he was born in Kansas, lived in Hawaii, Indiana, South Carolina, ultimately landing in Winchester for well over forty years.

Being a dedicated citizen was important to Philip and that led to his serving on numerous boards ranging from the Northwestern Community Services (chairman and board member), City Council and represented Winchester on Virginia First Cities, (chairman and member), Winchester Exchange Club Child-Parent Center of which he presided as Doo-Dah King, taking his duties very seriously! He was honored to be a recipient of a Tigger Award from Judge Elizabeth Kellas. Being an honorary member of the Beth El Congregation Sisterhood, was a source of pride and brought smiles. Philip was a relentless advocate for families and children through his work as a clinical and forensic psychologist, working with and for individual clients, as well as the federal court system.

Philip was the heart and soul of the North Braddock (No Bra) neighborhood. So many will hold on to their fond memories of him bringing people together on the veranda for Scotch on the Porch (or the beverage of one's choice), and let's not forget those cigars. People from all over Winchester appeared every Halloween for Philip's signature yearly event - Shots and Tots (because shots for tots would be wrong).

Philip attended and thrived at The Latin School of Indianapolis where he made lifelong friendships. Today he is remembered as being the one who encouraged others to do better. He was proud of having earned his undergraduate degree from Indiana University (Go Hoosiers!) and with his Psychology degree in hand became an orderly at the Winchester Medical Center, followed by a stint with Child Protective Services in Warren County, then back to school for a Masters Degree in Counseling from James Madison University, a second Masters at George Mason University He then worked at Growing Edge, an international consulting firm specializing in leadership development, all while earning his PhD in Clinical Psychology at George Mason University and raising a wonderful family. Continuing education was a always a passion which then took him on the path to earning his credential as a forensic psychologist.

Sartorial splendor, music, food, travel- such a range! Never without a hat, a walking stick (NOT a cane), bow ties, lapel pins, from Hawaiian shirts on the beach at the Valentin in Riviera Maya to tuxedos on the Queen Mary II, he rocked it all. A self-described poster child for the rhythmically impaired, that didn't stop him from taking dance lessons where he and Allyson danced the tango on outside steps at the Paris Opera House, followed by less successful ballroom dancing lessons where he did manage to master a sway. A broad appreciation for music took him from Van Morrison (a favorite) to blue grass (best block party) to classical (pass on opera). Movies - an aficionado of Monty Python, to A Man for All Seasons, and military documentaries. Scuba diving in Debrovnik - yes, he checked that off his list; to exploring museums and alley ways in Paris, Crete, Corfu, Catania, and much of Europe. Nothing quite compared, however, to the Handley Library - an absolute love of his - the books, the staff, the volunteers, all held a special place in his heart.

Arrangements are private, per Philip's wishes. In his memory, please consider doing an act of kindness in keeping with what Philip would have done. Donations in his memory may be made to Blue Ridge Care, 333 West Cork Street, Unit 405, Winchester, VA 22601. Their care, compassion, and professionalism were unparalleled.

Indeed, a life well lived!

Yesterday

His death was much too early for all the love and joy he showed at the Latin School of Indianapolis where I was privileged to be his classmate and a friend. He was always so kind to me and we often laughed a lot together. Our excursions to the TeePee restaurant the short time I lived with him in the same dorm were a scream. Much love to his family and dear friends.

Phillip was such a strong and active participant in our local neighborhood. The amount of effort he put into welcoming and inviting new members was something I always respected and looked up to him for. I might have had a few too many whiskeys on any given night on the porch, but I never regretted it. ;) He'll be both missed and fondly remembered.

Phil was one of the ropes course instructors at the Shepherd's Ford Center's Outdoor Experiential Educational Ropes Course on the Shenandoah River, owned and operated by Gertie Watkins and her daughter, Wendy. Witty, wise and usefully irreverent (endless catholic jokes!), I'll always remember his warm and encouraging teaching style and comfortable collaborative approach with his fellow trainers and client groups. Thank you, Phil (didn't know his preference for Phillip!) for your trust, kindness, fun, and shared wisdom. On behalf of the ragtag bunch of Shepherd's Ford trainers (Bob, Wendy, Katie, Anne, Tony, Fra, Harrison, and others) LOTS OF LOVE & JOY, in your further adventures & cosmic explorations! We miss you dearly, brother!-- Scott Denman

We loved seeing Philip at fund raisers & running into him on walks through Old Town. We toasted with cocktails many a time at Village Square & of course at Shots and Tots. He was a true community advocate serving with love and a smile. Philip, you made an impact on many and you will be missed. - Nikki & Frank Klebieko

To my Brother, Phil ( sorry Allyson, he was never Philip to me). I will miss our phone conversations that we had these past several years and the reminiscing of our escapades we shared during our days at LSI. I do believe my life has truly been blessed by having you as a friend. I will see you on the other side someday, my friend, and we can carry on where we left off. Love you

Dear Allyson and family,
I knew Philip as Al's brother, and my sister, Patricia's, brother-in-law. Whenever Philip was in Chicago, Al and Philip were typical brothers, laughing, teasing, doing goofy things they knew each other would enjoy. They often seemed to revert to an earlier time when life was simpler, they were young, and could be kids again.
Seeing this reminded me to appreciate my sister and sometimes simply to just enjoy each other's company, no cigars involved!
I was happy to have had times to get to know Philip, and see him as an awesome brother to Al and Pat.
My deepest sympathy.

David and I are deeply saddened to hear about Philip's passing. May all of his family find comfort in the love and support of each other and may the cherished memories he helped create bring you peace in the days ahead. We do remember Philip sitting on the outside deck on the cruise a bunch of us took. He was happy being there, observing life, enjoying the weather and visiting as we were right next door!

Phillip Pate was truly a man for all seasons. I knew him first at a few neighborhood gatherings on North Braddock. Then I enjoyed him and Allyson as parents when I taught two of their children. I learned about his parenting skills when Adam, as a sixth grader, wrote a delightful essay entitled "Me and My Dad." That was an account of road excursions in the sports car with the top down! Then Phillip volunteered for my reading program at Daniel Morgan even when his kids had moved on to high school. He and Bekka continued to come back and support students even in summer school. He was an amazing husband, parent, and member of the community. His footprint will remain with us for years to come. I am so sorry that his family, his friends, and the community are suffering a great loss. Thank you, Phillip, for giving so much of yourself to others.

Philip was a delightful, funny, playful and totally delightful man. Over almost 50 years in Winchester we participated in legendary parties, trips to the Valentin, and social events on his porch with him. He, Alan Fink, and Linda Szalay were part of the "Silly" committee at Beth El which produced fun events for Purim and Hanukkah for several years. He will be missed!
We want to send our condolences to Allyson, Adam, Jonathan, Becca, Katie, John, and the rest of the family.
