Philip Julian Phillips, born on March 31, 1944, departed this world on November 19, 2025, at home, leaving behind a rich tapestry of memories woven from a life dedicated to exploration, science, and love. He was a man of remarkable intellect, holding a doctorate that set the foundation for a career filled with impressive achievements.

During his graduate work, Phil discovered numerous new species of jellyfish, a testimony to his insatiable curiosity and passion for marine biology. Following this groundbreaking work, he opened his own laboratory dedicated to inspecting hazardous waste in buildings in New York, contributing significantly to public safety. Later, he served with honor in the Coast Guard, where he took charge of hazardous waste operations until his well-deserved retirement.

Phil was not just defined by his career; he was a kind and generous man who took immense pride in his family. He was deeply cherished by his wife, Sandra A. Katz, and is survived by his daughter and son-in-law. His heart encompassed a larger family, as he embraced his step-children: Aviva Cohen, Mark Katz, and their spouses, Barbara Standard and Lisa Katz.

A loving brother, Phil is also survived by his sister, Joan Ingber, and his brother-in-law, Harvey Ingber. He was a doting grandfather to his beloved grandchildren: Max Phillips, Sasha Cohen, Sophie Cohen, Step Grandchildren: Stefanie Levy, Zachary Levy, Noah Katz, and Zachary Katz, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride.

Phil's diverse interests painted a portrait of a well-rounded man brimming with creativity and talent. He was an accomplished musician, expressing himself through the clarinet and saxophone, and even led his own band during his high school years, often performing in the scenic Catskill mountain resorts. In addition to music, Phil had a knack for crafting jewelry and was an avid reader, constantly expanding his knowledge and appreciation of the world around him. Remarkably, he spoke several languages, including Russian, Hebrew, and Yiddish, showcasing his love for culture and communication.

As we remember Philip Julian Phillips, let us celebrate a life lived with purpose, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community. He leaves behind a legacy that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His impact on the world, through science, music, and personal connections, will linger on, reminding us all of the beauty of a life well-lived.

The Graveside service will be held on November 24, 2025 at 11:00 am, and Shiva will be observed after the service at 718 Orange Plime Walk, Henderson, NV 89011
