Philip J. Rodney LPN

Philip J. Rodney, LPN, 67, of Moosic, formerly of Roaring Brook Twp., died Sunday morning at Geisinger Community Medical Center Hospital, Scranton, after a courageous battle with kidney and heart disease. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Patricia Barone Rodney.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of Catherine Domenick Burns (Scranton) and the late William Rodney. Phil was a graduate of Central High School and Lackawanna County Area VoTech School of Practical Nursing and CMC School of Nursing with a multitude of additional training courses during his employments.

He worked full-time as an LPN in the CMC Neuro-Science Dept. from 1977-1997, being only the second male hired in the nursing department at that time. He then moved on to work full time for Hospice Preferred Choice, Erwine Home-Health & Hospice, Mountain View Center and Traditional Home Health. After he started his dialysis treatment in 2021, he continued part-time with Traditional Home Health until December 2022. He was the epitome of a highly dedicated and competent nurse, thriving on caring for patient's needs. Throughout his lifetime he enjoyed family and friends, hunting, fishing, bocce, photography, target shooting and bowling. He was a member of the Victor Alfieri Literary Society. He was a faithful Roman Catholic serving as Eucharistic minister until his illness prevented. He served as lay director and diocesan representative for the Diocese of Scranton Cursillo Movement and was the grand knight for the Knights of Columbus Cardinal John O'Connor Council 12967.

Phil was a man of few words, but no matter what the situation, joyful or problematic, you could count on Phil for a joke or highly witty comment. He preferred laughing to crying or complaining. The family is extremely grateful for the caring treatment by nurses at DaVita Dialysis, GCMC and Regional Hospital, all in Scranton.

He is also survived by daughter, Heather Rodney, LPN (Simpson); stepchildren, Paul Barone (Tracy), of Mechanicsburg; Beth Lepold (Joseph), of West Milford, N.J.; and Michael Barone (Neal), of Burnsville, Minn. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Carl Lepold, of Pompano Beach, Fla.; Nicholas Lepold, of Oakridge, N.J.; Jennifer Bach, of Waymart; Sean Burns, of Simpson; and Katelyn Burns, of Simpson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday at 10 a.m. at Queen of Apostles Church (formerly St. Mary's) on Hawthorne Street, Avoca, with the Rev. Phillip J. Sladicka, pastor.

Family will receive relatives and friends Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Savino Traditional Funerals and Cremation Care, Carl J. Savino Jr., supervisor, 157 S. Main Ave., Scranton, PA 18504.

Interment, St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.
