Phil died April 5, 2024 in Enfield CT. He was born on January 10, 1931 in Scranton, PA to Philip and Ann (Hanley) Thomas. Phil attended elementary school in Scranton and then moved to Ransom and later to Clark Summit, PA. In 1949, Phil graduated from the Newton-Ransom High School and then enlisted in the USAF as an aircraft mechanic. Phil was based at Westover AFB Chicopee, MA, where he met his wife, Marjorie Helfrich of Agawam, MA. Phil and Marjorie married in 1952 and moved to Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, AK. After discharge in 1954, Phil and Marge owned and operated the former Haskin's dairy farm in Amherst, MA. In 1960, Phil and family moved to Enfield CT, and Phil was employed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and other aerospace machine shops as an electron beam welder.
Phil is survived by his sister Janet Bailey of Enfield, his sons Jeffery (Julie) of The Villages, FL, Mark of Becket, MA, David (Mary) of Somers, CT, and his grandchildren Jamie, David (Karla), Michael (Jaimee), Samuel (Catherine), Andrew, Jordan and Jared and also by his special friend, Loretta Larson of Tipp City, OH. Phil was predeceased by his wife Marjorie in 2005.
Phil's family will receive relatives and friends from 11:45 - 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd, Enfield. A funeral service will follow at 12:45 at the funeral home, with burial with military honors commencing at 2 p.m. at MA Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Agawam, MA.
