Phillip David Burum, 76, of Ridgecrest, California, passed away on August 23, 2023, in Show Low, Arizona. He loved his family, his friends, and his country. He was a hard worker with a huge heart and a generous personality.
Born in Ridgecrest, Phillip graduated from Sherman E. Burroughs High School and went on to serve in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He contracted malaria during his first tour but demonstrated unwavering dedication and courage by returning for a second tour after his recovery.
After finishing his military service, Phillip returned to Ridgecrest to work at China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station. He held many roles there, fearlessly climbing poles in the high voltage shop and performing weapons testing for the environmental engineering group and working as an IT specialist before he retired. He is fondly remembered by coworkers as having admirable skill, dedication, integrity, and charisma.
When he wasn't working or serving his country, Phillip enjoyed riding his Harley alongside his nephew, Jimmy. They shared many memorable adventures on the open road. He also enjoyed spending time at home with his pets and the people he was especially close to. His boyish laughter and mischievous expressions were the hallmark of his personality and a treasured part of every visit.
Phillip's love for animals was unparalleled. He changed life for the better for the multitude of animals he adopted and countless others through the time and money he gave to local shelters. His relationship with animals was unique and memorable; he once herded a flock of wild turkeys into his Jeep to move them out of a busy street.
Phillip David Burum was well-known and well-loved in his community. He will be remembered for his charisma, hard work, compassion for animals, and unwavering dedication to his country and his family. His presence brightened the lives of those around him, and his memory will live on in the hearts and minds of the people he touched.
