Phillip Alvin Greene Sr. of Elizabethtown, NC passed away on November 24, 2025, at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Imogene and Julian Greene. Phillip leaves behind his wife Edwina Cross Greene; his three sons, Phillip Jr, (Suzanne) of Elizabethtown, McLane of Elizabethtown, and David (Kelli) of Elizabethtown; six grandchildren, Haylee (Michael Uzzell), Allee, Parker, Mason, Karlen, and Charlie; one great grandchild, Sara Reece Uzzell; his brother, Casey (Donna) of Elizabethtown; nephew, Julian; and cherished dog, Millie.
Phillip was a devoted member of Trinity Methodist Church. He married Edwina Cross in 1969 and was with her for 56 loving years. He enjoyed the outdoors and was responsible for many local boys’ introduction to hunting and fishing. Phillip cherished spending time at the “Farm” on the Cape Fear River and target shooting from the bank. His love of firearms and shooting was shared with his boys and most of their friends. Phillip possessed a “you-go-first” personality and wanted everyone to get a turn at any activity that was going on.
Along with his passion for the outdoors, Phillip loved music, specifically bluegrass. He had a special talent for picking the banjo and we were blessed to witness this talent firsthand. In 1984, the band, The Colly Swamp Review, played at the World’s Fair in Tennessee. He was a member of the band from 1975 until around 1995, but his love for music continued beyond his time in the band. Phillip also enjoyed reading, especially in his recliner with a dachshund in his lap. It is not surprising from all his reading that he had a knack for writing and a way with words.
An unimaginable hole has been left since Phillip’s passing. He was such a large force within the family he and Edwina created over the years. He left his family with cherished memories. His quiet wisdom and vast knowledge will truly be missed. Phillip’s patience was second to none and it showed in his marriage and the raising of his sons. He will be missed by those that knew him and would have been missed by those that didn’t.
A Celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at 2 pm at the Trinity Methodist Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Activity Building.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Trinity Methodist Church.
