Phillip Malone Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Melcher Hammer Funeral Home on Mar. 20, 2026.
Phillip J. Malone, 71, of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, March 18,2026 at SOMC Hospice. He was born February 13, 1955 in Aberdeen, Maryland, to the late, John and Anne (Coyle) Malone.

Phillip was proud of his many years in law enforcement, especially being the original 911 dispatcher for Scioto County. However, what he was more publicly known for was his work as a DJ, both with WPAY and his mobile services as Phil "Magic" Malone. If Phil didn't make your feet move, he most likely touched your heart or someone else's you know with his many years volunteering for Boy Scouts of America. He also served as a 4th degree knight with the Knights of Columbus.

Along with his parents Phillip is preceded in death by a brother, John Francis Malone.

He is survived by his sons Scott Malone (Chassidy) and Cody Malone, both of Portsmouth, his siblings, Greg (Sharon) Malone of Lucasville, David (Jacqui) Malone of Portsmouth, Mark (Kay) Malone of Sciotoville, Deanne (John) Henry of Waynesville, Mary (Ed) Anderson of Lucasville, and Dan (Beth) Malone of McDermott, six grandchildren; Brooklynn Howard, Brady Malone, Peyton Howard, Riley Malone, Mylee Malone, and Carson Malone-Whitt and twelve nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 12:00 PM Tuesday, March 24, 2026 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with Father Stephen Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Portsmouth. A visitation for friends and family will be 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Monday, March 23, 2026 at Melcher Hammer Funeral Home in Portsmouth. A Recitation of the Rosary will follow at 7:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Phil to Sierra's Haven for New and Used Pets Animal Shelter, 80 Easter Drive, Portsmouth, OH 45662.
