Phillip McDonald Obituary

Phillip Wayne McDonald lived almost 79 years in his earthly pilgrimage with his faith always strong, his sight on hard work and his commitment to his family solid. Phillip crossed over into eternity from Baptist Hospital-Oxford on Friday, November 28, 2025, after a period of declining health. He was 78 years old. Born December 30, 1946, in Lee County to the late Calvin McDonald and Hazel Hankins McDonald, he grew up a "country boy" and never veered from it. He attended Mooreville High School and became a self-employed electrician owning and operating McDonald's Electric for many years. His last working years were spent working for his son, Danny, in his business. Phillip had a code of ethics that called for simple living. He was a member of Emmanuel Assembly of God in Nettleton where he faithfully worshiped. Phillip loved the outdoors, bird watching, shooting squirrels, hunting in general, fishing and doing yard work. He treasured his family and was a strong believer in Christ. He was always glued to Fox News and loved taking trips before his health failed. A service celebrating his life will be held at 2 PM Tuesday, December 2, 2025, in the Sadie Holland Memorial Chapel at Holland Funeral Directors-Tupelo with his Pastors, Brian Wood and Terence Sutterfield officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 3 PM-7 PM Monday and from Noon-service time on Tuesday, all at Holland-Tupelo Chapel, which is honored to be serving their friends and neighbors. For those unable to attend, the service may be viewed at hollandfuneraldirectors.com/Live-streaming at 2 PM and will be archived thereafter. Phillip is survived by his family, his wife, Leslie Morris McDonald of Plantersville, to whom he married in Dec., 2002; his three sons, Danny McDonald (Phillis) of Grenada, David McDonald (Judy) of Arkansas and Dennis McDonald (Kim) of Nettleton; his daughter, Blain Bush (David) of Plantersville; his step son, Scott Poteet (Heather) of Shannon; his sisters, Judy Justice (Harold) of Saltillo and Janice Gann of Mantachie; 20 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren;. He was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin and Hazel; the mother of his children and his wife of 37 years, Shirley McDonald, his brother, Scott McDonald and his step son, James Poteet. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Eric Hankins, Brad Hankins, Jerry Ford, Jamie Joyner, Terry Hankins and Robby Hankins. Phillip was a good man, a good father, a good friend and I believe a humble man who will be missed.

Phillip and his crew, (Eric & Brad) were the first locals to welcome us to the Tupelo area. He and the 'boys' always made us feel like family, that we were welcome, cared about and loved. Phillip was a Very Special man and will be truly missed. Who will I make my wild blueberry coffee cake for now?
