Phillip “Cheetie” Daniel Stephens, 79, passed away at his home on Sunday, September 1st, 2024.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Rev Zack Hyler officiating. Graveside military honors will follow and be performed by the Rockingham County Honor Guard at Evergreen Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, from 6:00PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home and other times at the home.
Phillip was born in Rockingham County to the late Isaac Stephens and Marshie Stanley Stephens. He attended Ruffin High School later joining the US Army where he served during Vietnam as a Tank driver with the 11th Armored Cavalry “Black Horse” Regiment. After leaving the Army, he went to work as a journeyman electrician. After 29 years of service Phillip retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Danville, Virginia. He was a long-term member of Reidsville Christian Church. He was an avid artist, golfer, and carpenter/woodworker. He loved to read. He read the entire Bible multiple times as it was his morning routine to read scripture. Phillip loved James Patterson books and would read an entire book in a couple of days. He had boxes of ones he had finished. He rarely missed his grandkids ball games, plays, band concerts, & Friday night marching band performances. He also loved getting together with his brothers to reminisce about growing up on the Stephens farm. Most of all he loved his family.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his son-in-law, Tim Ham; brothers, Isaac Stephens Jr. (Mildred), John Stephens (Katherine), Marvin “Bud” Stephens (Temple), George Stephens, and Don “Nink” Stephens; sister, Frances Stephens Huskey (Wilbur); brother-in-law, Maynard Hyler; sisters-in-law, Vickie Hyler and Shelby Stephens.
Phillip is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathy Hyler Stephens; children, Dawn Stephens Rickman (Todd), Stephanie Stephens Ham (Jason Hodge); grandchildren, Mackenzie and Maddie Rickman, Spencer Starr, Jackson Ham, Braeden and Colton Seacat; great grandchildren, Evan and Ember Williams; siblings, Jim Stephens, Wayne “Ootie” Stephens (Orenda), and Douglas “Punk” Stephens (Judy); brother’s in law, Barry Hyler (Kathy), Darrell Hyler, and Michael Hyler (Cathy); sisters-in-law, Katherine Holt Hyler, Jean Stephens, Joyce Kincaid; canine companion, Ace; feline companion Gary; along with a large and loving group of extended family and friends.
