Phillip Sutton Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services - Niles on Jan. 16, 2026.
Phillip Sutton, 79, passed away on January 15, 2026, in Stevensville, MI. He was born on February 21, 1946 in Buchanan, MI, to Howard and Helen (Hawk) Sutton. He grew up on a farm outside of Buchanan and enjoyed the country most of his life.

Phil graduated from New Troy High School. He worked for Clark equipment in Buchanan for several years. He went on to be a Winemaker at Madron Lake Hills Winery and eventually worked as a Public Transportation Driver for Dial-A-Ride in Niles, Michigan for almost 25 years.

Phil was a proud father to his 2 children, Jenny and Katy. He was a simple man, with simple tastes. He loved riding his bike as often as he could, fishing, car shows, playing his trumpet and listening to music, especially the Beach Boys and The Beatles. He enjoyed going to the casino with his friend, Pat and spending time with his family. He was a lifelong Notre Dame Football fan and rooted for The Irish every game day. Phil was known for having a quirky sense of humor and being "Old Reliable", always being there whenever he was asked. He had dad jokes for days and enjoyed off beat things like Svengoolie every Saturday night. He was a popcorn aficionado and a history buff.

Phillip is survived by his daughter Kathryn Smith and son-in-law Darren Smith of Buchanan, daughter Jenny Reed and son-in-law Jason Reed of Racine, WI. Brother, Richard Sutton and Sister-in-law, Lois Sutton of Cadillac, MI. Sister, Linda Rosenthal and Brother-in-law, Robert Rosenthal of Scotts, MI. His friend of over 40 years, Patricia Potts of Niles, MI. and his 7 nieces and nephews, Roger, Laurie, Rob, Ryan, Tom, Karen and Dan.

Phillip is preceded in death by his parents, Howard Sutton and Helen Sutton.

Visitation for Phillip will be held on Wednesday, January 21, from 10:00am-11:00am, at Brown Funeral Home. Memorial services, led by Chaplain Ellen Laan, will be held immediately following visitation.

Per Phil's wishes, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Phil's honor can be made to his children to cover funeral expenses.
