I met Nancy when I spent time at a program in the Raleigh-Durham area in 2009. Over the course of three weeks we talked books, politics, food, and movies. She was a lover of bridge and she introduced me to the game. We attended a Durham bulls game and saw the movie Julie and Julia with some other program attendees. She was a lovely conversationalist and I had the pleasure of visiting her bookstore.

Over those three weeks we had a nice friendship and I even got to meet Jim one afternoon when we went to Starbucks.

Ive thought of Nancy many times and even though our paths crossed briefly, her memory continues to be a blessing. I'm so glad I knew Nancy Olson.

Dear Jim and Family,
I was so very sad to her of Nancy's passing. She will be missed by me, and so many others, for all the joy and fascination in books she brought to Raleigh. You and she were a part of my family long before I knew either of you. Between Reston friendships with Bob and Marsha Neuman and Bob and Alice Tetro. I still recall the day we met and you recognized my last name because you had known my Dad. Your memories and comments about him remain precious gift for me. May your family be cradled in the love of friends and family.

Though I haven't seen her in years, the realization that a chance encounter is no longer possible is heartbreaking. How uplifting it was to be around Nancy.
Jim and family, my sincere condolences. I'm saddened that I won't be able to attend the memorial, but I assure you I'll be there in spirit.

Jim, my children and I learned of Nancy's passing on Sunday as we were sharing an Easter call. We were all stunned and terribly saddened. You and all of your family should know that we all loved her dearly, as I know you did as well. She was a genuine treasure.

Our son and his friend would ride their bikes to QRB most Sunday afternoons to sit next to hearth and read books. I asked Nancy to please tell me what I owed her for the books they read in the store. She would have none of that insisting they were mannerly and they were READING! What a wonderful person we will all miss.

A Native American Proverb tells us "When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a manner that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice."

This proverb speaks to the way so many of us will always feel about Nancy. We rejoice for the Life that she shared with us all.

Nancy made Quail Ridge Books a center for writers, readers, browsers and music lovers of all ages. She loved books and people and famously creating "happenings."
