Phyllis Holtzapple Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wagner-Elfner and Burg Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc. - Red Lion on Dec. 26, 2025.
Phyllis C. (Barnhart) Holtzapple, 96, entered into eternal rest on December 19, 2025. She was the beloved wife of the late William H. Holtzapple. Born on October 13, 1929, in York, PA, Phyllis was the daughter of the late Raymond E. and Edna R. (Dellinger) Barnhart.

She was a 1947 graduate of William Penn Senior High School, York, and a 1950 graduate of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Her deep interest and commitment to her profession were recognized as she received numerous awards for her work in medical nursing; particularly in understanding body mechanics in illness.

Phyllis and her husband owned and operated Holtzapple Food Market, formerly located on S. Franklin St. Red Lion, PA. Together, they were the proud parents of their beloved son, Mark William Holtzapple, and also leave behind a daughter-in-law, Denise, a grandson, Ben, and a granddaughter, Alice.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Barnhart. Phyllis cherished her extended family, maintaining a close bond with her mother's sisters and their families.

Professionally, Phyllis made significant contributions as a certified occupational health nurse, serving several industrial companies, including Allis-Chalmers Corporation, York, PA, from which she retired. She was deeply involved in her professional community, serving as President of the Central Pennsylvania Association of Occupational Health Nurses, Treasurer of the State Association, and as a delegate to the Nurses in Washington Program.

Her interests extended beyond nursing: she was a passionate gardener and artist. While residing at Country Meadows, she earned a Certificate of Excellence for her oil painting titled "Sing High Ho Unt the Green Holly." The painting, created as part of the Green Thumb Garden Club, was later featured as a Christmas card for Country Meadows.

Phyllis was also proud to participate in the Nurses' Health Study conducted by Harvard University, reflecting her lifelong curiosity and dedication to advancing health and science.

Phyllis will be remembered for her warmth, curiosity, and dedication-to her family, her faith, and her profession.

Services and burial will be private at the convenience of the family in Red Lion Cemetery.
