Phyllis Joan Parrott, the daughter of Melborn and Henrietta (Fegebank) Massmann, was born on October 21, 1937, in Paullina, IA. Her childhood years were spent on the farm in Paullina, where she attended school and graduated from Paullina High School in 1956. Following high school, Phyllis worked at the Red Door Café, and later a cook for the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee, IA.

She also enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, and especially reading. She was known for baking cakes for weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries. She also enjoyed volunteering for the Cherokee Library Archives. She adored anything that had apples on them. Later in life, she spent hours knitting wash cloths while watching Iowa sports on TV.
