It’s been almost 3 years since we lost our beloved Phyllis. I still think of her every single day and will for always. Miss you so much dear friend. ❤

Phyllis was my beloved aunt and a cherished companion and spouse to her husband of 37 years, Professor John Haegert. She was a wise, witty, and compassionate humanist who shared in joy in life and learning with her students and family. Whether teaching me about the angel mounds or relaxing with her family, "Toby" was a generous and loving soul who always made those around her feel comfortable and welcomed. She was a brilliant scholar who loved life and literature and taught me much about both. I will never forget her.

Phyllis was simply the best friend a person could have. She was brilliant, funny, had that wonderful sense of the absurd, and most of all she cared about people and was devoted to family and friends. She has left a void that cannot be filled, but memories of her will provide some solace. I will always hear Phyllis saying, Okay John wants the phone accompanied by that wonderful and all-knowing chuckle.

Phyllis was brilliant, warm, and empathetic. I could not have asked for a better friend or ally. She cared for others and her quick wit and intelligence displayed itself at every turn. I am still stunned and send my love to her husband, my bubba John Haegert, and to her children and family. There is a void that won't be filled.

The world lost a beautiful woman Sunday. Phyllis new no bounds when it came to loving her husband John Haegert and had countless friends throughout the country. I was privileged to have known her and will always cherish the interactions we had together.
Peace, Joy and Harmony my dear friend.

Dr. Phyllis Toy was my professor in the mid 90sI enrolled in literally everything she taught. Dr. Toy served as one of my mentors; she pushed me to limits I thought were beyond me. Phyllis was also my friend, and I travelled with her to a few conferences wherein she presented. I still have some bookshelves she gave to me when she and John moved from Lant Circle. She was an amazing, brilliant, fascinating woman. And though I think of her often (actually just a few days ago) I regret that we lost touch these last years and sincerely offer my condolences to John and her family.

Phyllis was an incredibly talented teacher who could walk into a classroom and inspire and enthrall her students. With her positive attitude she empowered students to reach their own goals of excellence. Her wit and intellect were encouragements to students and friends. I was honored to be her colleague.

I had Dr. Toy as a professor for one semester at USI. She was an excellent and caring teacher. She always showed interest in me and my life beyond that semester when I saw her on campus. I knew and believed she genuinely cared. She was a great person and I'm so sorry for your loss.

She was one of the loveliest people I worked with in my early years at USI. I loved her sense of humor and keen observations.

Phyllis was a remarkably gifted teacher who could walk into a classroom and enthrall and inspire students. Her positive ability to mentor students would lead them to achieve excellence in their own work with confidence and enthusiasm. It was a privilege to be her colleague.
