It is with profound love and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rafaela Vásquez Gutiérrez, who left this world at the age of 73 to be reunited with her beloved son in the arms of our Lord. Rafaela was a woman of extraordinary strength, unwavering faith, and boundless love - a devoted wife, a selfless mother, a cherished grandmother, and a beacon of grace for everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Rafaela was born in Mexico, where she spent her early years before making her way to California as a young woman. It was in Mexico where she captured the heart of the man who would become her devoted husband, José. Knowing of her health challenges and the difficult road that may lie ahead, José chose to follow her to California - not out of obligation, but out of deep and abiding love. He chose her, fully and completely, and that choice defined a lifetime of devotion.

From a young age, Rafaela faced health battles that would have broken most people. She underwent open heart surgery not once but twice throughout her life and was warned by doctors after the first surgery that carrying a pregnancy could cost her own life. Yet when she became pregnant, she made the courageous and deeply faithful decision to continue - and from that sacrifice came her miracle baby, Ernie. He was her joy, her testament to faith, and living proof of how much she was willing to give for the ones she loved. Eight years later, she welcomed her daughter Diana, completing the family that became her greatest purpose and pride.

Rafaela dedicated every day of her life to her family. She was the kind of woman who never judged, never wavered in her support, and loved each member of her family exactly as they were. Her kitchen was a place of warmth and nourishment - she was an incredible cook who poured her heart into every meal. But more than any recipe, what she passed down was her spirit: her resilience, her gentleness, and her deep, unshakeable trust in God.

When her son Ernie passed away three years ago, a piece of Rafaela went with him. She carried that grief quietly and with grace, but those closest to her knew that her heart longed to be with him again. As her own health continued to decline, her faith never faltered. She never questioned God, never lost her peace, and never stopped believing. She faced every difficult day with the quiet courage of a woman who knew exactly where she was going and who was waiting for her there.

In her final season, her husband José and her daughter Diana became her dedicated caretakers - staying through the long nights, navigating the frightening moments, and loving her with everything they had. Their devotion to her was a reflection of the love she had always poured into them. She was never alone. Rafaela is survived by her beloved husband José; her daughter Diana and son-in-law Sam; her granddaughter Chantel and great-grandson Kingston; and her granddaughters Celeste, Isabelle, and Samantha. She was preceded in death by her cherished son, Ernie.

She was our heart. She was our home. And we take comfort knowing she is now whole, at peace, and holding her Ernie once more.
