I met Raffaello and Nicole in Rome in 2007. I have never forgotten either of them! My husband and I, Americans on a travel grant, were sitting outside of a small trattoria enjoying lunch and we struck up a conversation. He told the story of his friendship with Pope John Paul and the Pope's harrowing assasination attempt. I thought he was one of the loveliest humans I'd ever met. I can still see his sparkling blue eyes. Sending condolences to his family!

As Raffaello´s abundant contributions live on, so do the memories of this wonderful man. His uniqueness is etched in many hearts.
With loving sympathy to Nicole.

Raffaello's many, momentous contributions to transplantation medicine were exceeded only by his adoration of his wife, Nicole. Our hearts are with Nicole.
