Ralph “Smitty” Schmidt, 90, passed away peacefully February 22, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Springfield, July 23, 1935, the son of the late Clarence and Lucy (Brayton) Schmidt. He was a graduate of Trade High School. Ralph was a proud member of Teamsters 404 who started delivering for Steigers and last worked at Hulmes Transportation in 2025. He enjoyed cruising, playing cards, bowling and going to the casino. He leaves his beloved wife of 64 years, Eileen (Lacas) Schmidt, his son, Joseph (Lisa), granddaughter, Jessica (Kyle), grandsons, James, Preston (Blu) and Tyler Schmidt all of West Springfield, sister, Dorothy (Ron) Manning of Scottsdale, AZ, step grandchildren, Josh (Trisha) Daigle, Stephanie (Angela) Daigle and Allisa (Michael) Daigle and several nieces and nephews. Ralph was predeceased by his son, Paul in 2007. A Funeral Home Service will be held Monday March 2, 2026, 11AM at the Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home 1043 Westfield St West Springfield with calling hours from 9-11AM and burial to follow in St Thomas Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Shriners Hospital 516 Carew St Springfield, MA 01104.
