Randall “Randy” C. Meyer, age 77, of North Mankato, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 26, 2026.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 6, 2026, at Northview – North Mankato Mortuary. The visitation will precede the service, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Mankato.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to BENCHS (Blue Earth and Nicollet County Humane Society). Our dad had a lifelong love for animals and a special place in his heart for pets in need, which is why we have chosen this organization for memorial donations. Contributions made in his honor will help provide shelter, medical care, and loving homes for animals throughout our community.
Randy was born on July 20, 1948, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Elvin C. and Aagot K. (Knutson) Meyer. He grew up in Humboldt, Iowa, graduating from Humboldt High School in 1967. Even then, it was clear he did not plan on sitting still anytime soon. He kept busy with football, basketball, Future Farmers of America, concert choir, and DECA — a combination that perfectly captured his competitive spirit, strong voice, and gift for conversation.
He continued his education at Iowa Community College, earning an Associate of Arts degree, and later graduated from Mankato State University in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science in Parks and Recreation. College was also where his love of music truly took center stage. As the lead singer of a “Peter, Paul and Mary”-style band, Randy happily stepped up to the microphone, a place he remained very comfortable throughout his life. Music was a lifelong joy, and his family enjoyed many private concerts over the years, requested or not.
On July 18, 1980, Randy was united in marriage to Sara McHugh at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville, Iowa. Introduced through mutual friends, their 46-year partnership was built on commitment to each other and unwavering support for their family.
Randy was a driven and dedicated salesman who never met a stranger. He worked for Port Huron in Des Moines and later for Shaver Manufacturing in Graettinger, Iowa, where he served as Vice President of Sales. He also worked for many years with Crysteel Truck Equipment, which ultimately brought his family to Mankato. At Crysteel, he especially enjoyed working on military contracts and traveling across the country and abroad. Randy could sell just about anything, but more importantly, he built relationships that lasted long after the deal was done.
Community and family were at the center of his world. In Estherville, he was active in youth wrestling and the Sertoma Club. After moving to Mankato, he became one of Mankato West’s most dedicated fans. He was often the first in the stands, settled into his favorite seat before warm-ups even began. He supported the West Booster Club and helped organize traveling girls’ volleyball and basketball programs — and he rarely attended a game without offering enthusiastic commentary (whether the referees asked for it or not).
A devoted Minnesota sports fan, Randy loved cheering on the Twins, Vikings, Gophers, and Timberwolves. Wins were celebrated loudly; losses were analyzed thoroughly.
Randy found his greatest enjoyment outdoors. He loved fishing, golfing, and long weekends at the softball diamond. Time on the lake with friends and family was especially dear to him. Later in life, even when he could no longer ride in the boat, he cherished car rides to Dairy Queen and visits to local lakes.
He loved to travel for both work and pleasure, always packing his golf clubs “just in case.” He proudly shared stories of the many courses he played, especially his treasured round at Pebble Beach — a memory that may have improved slightly with each retelling. In the summer, if he wasn’t golfing or by the water, you could find him in the bleachers at yet another softball game, keeping score, offering feedback, and faithfully supplying concession stand money.
Above all else, Randy loved his family. Holidays were some of his happiest times, especially Halloween, Christmas, and Easter. His grandchildren brought him immense pride and joy, and he delighted in every moment spent with them. He also lovingly included pets and grand-pets as part of the family, spoiling them whenever he could.
Randy is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sara; his three children, Mollie Meyer of North Mankato, Krista (Kyle) Kayser of Emery, SD, and Ryan (Kayla) Meyer of Victoria, MN; and six cherished grandchildren, A’Shiyah Meyer; Joseph, Lane, and Kennedy Kayser; and Delaney and Declan Meyer. He is also survived by his siblings, Maureen (Tom) Steil and Kevin Meyer; his aunt, Geraldine Harris; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Gene (Patricia) McHugh and Geraldine McHugh; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Deb Haglund; his in-laws, Gerald McHugh and Mary (Paul) Bracht; and James (Dorothy) McHugh.
Randy will be remembered for his strong singing voice, his steady presence in the stands, his love of the outdoors, and his unwavering devotion to his family. His life was one of hard work, dedication, and deep pride in those he loved most.
