Randall Updike Obituary

Randall Snead Updike, 84 of Washington, Va went to be with the Lord on July 26, 2025.

Randall was born January 31, 1941 to John and Clara Updike. Randall grew up in Washington with his four brothers: Kelly, Glenn, Francis and Lyle. He was baptized member of the Washington Baptist Church.

Randall graduated from Rappahannock High School and went on to Virginia Tech where he participated in ROTC, Alpha Zeta, Block & Bridal and the livestock/meat judging teams. He graduated with a degree in Animal Science.

Randall went on to work for Va Extension services and spent over 40 years working for Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Service (VDACS). While working for VADCS, he developed buyer relations which increased competition for Virginia livestock, guided growth of the Virginia Cattle Feeders Association, promoted feeder cattle to out-of-state buyers, started year-round feeder cattle marketing and oversaw swine exports to South America. He was involved in setting the national feeder calf grading standards.

Randall was a noted livestock judge and coached the 1965 national Champion 4-H livestock team. He volunteered for decades with the Rappahannock 4-H Livestock club and provided education to 4-H clubs throughout Virginia. He greatly valued education and served as a Member of the Rappahannock School Board. In 2019, he was made a member of the Virginia Livestock Hall of Fame.

Randall married Marie (Toni) Updike on December 17, 1977 and lived in Washington on Skyway Hills Farm. Randall and Toni had three children: Scott, Justin and Katie. Randall was successful in breeding and showing Champions at the Local, State and National level for Cattle (Angus), Sheep and Swine. Randall is survived by his wife, Toni Updike, Son, M. Scott Updike, daughter in law Ashley Updike, 2 grandchildren, Ella and Clara Updike and daughter Katie Updike, Brothers Francis Updike (and family) and Lyle Updike (and family). Randall Updike An outstanding livestock stockman, Va cattle industry contributor, educator and good friend. I told many people over the years that I would learn more about beef cattle from a visit to his farm than any other day of the year. It was a joy to work with him in the many beef cattle events in northern Virginia and have missed my time with him since I moved back to the family farm in Pa. What else can I say other than " a job well done and a life well served." May the Lord give comfort to Toni and family and God bledd you all.
