Ray Avelar Obituary

Visit the Getz Funeral Home - Las Cruces website to view the full obituary.

Ray Avelar, a loving father, devoted husband, and hardworking soul, passed away on March 5, 2026, at the age of 67.

Born on August 25, 1958, in Las Cruces, Ray lived a life defined by kindness, dedication, and a generous heart. Family, friends, and all who met him knew him as someone who worked tirelessly for the people he loved and was always willing to lend a helping hand. His big heart and warm spirit left a lasting impression on everyone around him.

Ray shared 42 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Bonnie L. Avelar. Together they built a life centered on love, family, and unwavering support for one another. He would often give Bonnie a hard time about decorating for the holidays, but it was always in good fun—he secretly loved being part of the festivities and the joy it brought her.

Above all else, Ray cherished his family. He was a proud and loving father who believed deeply in the importance of hard work, integrity, and compassion. Through his actions and quiet strength, he taught those around him the value of perseverance and the importance of caring for others. Ray had a playful side too, often making funny faces and gestures that brought laughter to everyone around him—a trait his daughter Heather fondly recalls inheriting from him. Whether it was a dramatic eye-roll, a whimsical shrug, or a goofy expression at just the right moment, Ray had a way of making ordinary moments hilarious and unforgettable.

Ray enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. He liked playing the slots on his tablet and always found joy in visiting the casino. He also took pride in maintaining his yard, enjoyed fishing, and loved going on family vacations where he could spend time with those closest to him. Ray had a special love for animals, especially his beloved cats, Kiki and Simba. Most of all, he found his greatest happiness in the moments shared with the people he loved most.

Ray is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Bonnie L. Avelar; his daughter, Heather (Martin); and his beloved grandsons, Roman and Ethan Orrantia. He is also survived by his siblings Andrea Avelar, Luis Avelar, Josie Avelar, Speedy Avelar, and Juan Avelar, as well as many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his son, Damien O. Avelar; his father, Juan Avelar; his mother, Antonia Avelar; his sister, Margie Avelar; and his brother, Thomas Avelar.

A viewing will be held Thursday, March 19, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., followed by a Rosary from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Getz Funeral Home.

A Funeral Service will be held Friday, March 20, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at San Jose Catholic Church in La Mesa, NM. Burial will follow at Anthony Cemetery.

Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we take comfort in the love and memories Ray gave us. His kindness, strength, playful humor, and unwavering love for his family will never be forgotten. The lessons he taught, the laughter he shared, and the example he set will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed, but forever remembered.
