Raymond Joseph August

1928 - 2023

Raymond Joseph August, 95, was born on February 16, 1928, in New Orleans, LA. He was the eldest son of Joseph Alphonse and Lillian (Rozier) August. He departed this life on November 4, 2023. He was educated in New Orleans, attended St. Peter Claver, Xavier Prep, and graduated from Joseph S. Clark Senior high school. Raymond was a star basketball player and outstanding pool player during his youth. After high school he joined the US Army during WWII and traveled with the military where he enjoyed playing basketball in his free time. He was a devout Catholic and longtime active member of St. Maria Goretti Church Holy Name Society in New Orleans. Raymond, a Saints fan since the beginning, loved his family and fur babies. Raymond worked hard all his life to support his family and after years of working as a janitor, he used his learned knowledge to establish August Building Maintenance, Inc., a successful commercial janitorial service, in 1977 at a time when black business ownership in New Orleans was rare. Since his retirement, ABM has continued operations under the leadership of his children. Raymond leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 67 years Theresa Vivian (Sanders), daughters Sharon King (Henry) and Donna, sons Gregory, Wayne, and Dwight (Bettye), grandchildren Jason, Jessica, Auriel, Jennifer, Dwight Jr., Hannah, Alexis, Kaitlyn, Alec, Alyssa, and Joey, siblings Gloria Brown, Evangeline Joseph (Gary), Oliver Green (Althea), in-laws Barbara August and Edward Robinson, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Alphonse, and Lillian (Rozier) and stepmother Pearl August; sisters Karen August Robinson, Octavia Robinson; and brothers Jacque August, Joseph Alphonse August Jr., Curtis Michael August, and Louis Green; and daughter-in-law Pamela Chevalier-August. Family and friends are invited to attend the Homegoing Celebration honoring the life and legacy of Raymond Joseph August on Friday November 17, 2023, at St. Maria Goretti Church 7300 Crowder Blvd., viewing starts at 10:00 a.m. followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m. Reverend Daniel H. Green, officiating. Interment will follow at St. Louis Cemetery No. 3, 3421 Esplanade Ave. Repass will be held afterwards at NALC, 4200 Elysian Fields Ave, 1-4 pm.
